History Does anyone recognize this bumper jack?

I have never seen one with a round hole in the base.

There are no numbers that I can see.

I got it out of a closed Pontiac dealership. So I am guessing it might be GM.

 

As I recall the old V-dubs had a round hole, but shorter. Maybe the bus/transporter was tall .... justa thought.

 

Standard issue bumper jack for most cars in the 50s and 60s, maybe into the 70s. The swap meets are full of them. The base has a hole in it because it's turned upside down and used to hold the spare tire down with a stud attached to the floor and run through the center hole in the spare and through the hole in the base and secured with a big wing nut.
I remember some had round holes and some were cut to fit the odd squareish shaft of the jack.

 

Looks very much like a 1955-56 bumper jack except for the round hole in the base. Chevy's were square. So I'm guesssing it is for a mid 50's BPO.

 

My 56 Poncho came with that jack when I bought it. If it was orignal who knows.

 

My old '57 Chev came with the same Jack, again, don't know if it was with it from knew.

 

It looks like a jack I had in my 55 Pontiac. You know why they put a $ 1.00 jack in a $ 3,000.00 car? They ran out of fifty cent ones.

 

I have seen a lot of bumper jacks but none that were designated as 50s Pontiac. I see several similar "Chevy" ones on FeeBay but none with the round hole for the jack mast.
It seems to make sense coming from a Pontiac dealership.

 

No that is not an original 57 chevy jack.

 

Looks late 30's or 40's to me.. Bumper plate is small like it would fit the blade style bumpers......

 

It has "patent applied for" stamped on it, so it must be one of the earliest versions. A patent search might help.

 

Could be some generic item...sold at auto parts emporiums all across the country.....

I thought most of the bug jacks had a little square foldable lifting arm that inserted into the running board supports, and was a screw based jack, not a ratchet...

vw never used a rachet type jack, just friction on pipe.

You could make something out of that, I'm just not sure what.

 

(My 56 Poncho came with that jack when I bought it.)

his name is jack. born in the early 50's. a real uplifting guy. unstable at times. i was told never to lay underneath him. his footing isnt the greatest.
