Just curious as to what you guys have down with this. I have a friend build a twin turbo build on his Ford small block. Efficiency wise that seems to be a very viable option. (however, SBC for me). After learning of the many points that Roots are bad for (poor efficiency, heating issues) I figured a TT small block would be a good idea, or at the least a Centrifugal supercharger. Hopefully this thread will be a very cool garage tour.
We only mess with "roots" type blowers on this forum.... More traditional than a pair of 1000 watt Revlon "hair dryers"..
A friend of mine built an early 50's Pontiac with a twin turbo sbc / Tremec / 9" Ford - conservative estimate with size of turbos, etc. is in the 1000-1100 hp range... Don't you think Kolofski's Willys would fit here on the HAMB? Steve
There's been several posts on here regarding turbocharging, with lots of great information, but your best bet is to hang around www.theturboforums.com where ~25,000 people are there just to talk about turbos.
I'm putting a twin T kit on my 67 390FE. Then I'll stuff it in the chopped, channelled and Z'd 48 Ford PU I have waiting!
Graham, we have a Turbocharging/Nitrous Oxide social group here on the HAMB I started a few years ago. Alex, Metalshapes is Moderating it now, why not join, there are some very knowledgeable folks in the group that can help. Click on the " Community " tab, and then on " Socail Groups ". TR
Modern? In 1965 the Mallicoat Bros. were tearing up B/G and setting new records with their twin turbo SBC '41 Willys coupe. And turbos date back to before that.
I have been building Turbo engines for better than 35 years now. My best advice for anyone contemplating this is to get the book by Corky Bell titled " Maximum Boost ". TR
Yep. I was waiting for somebody to weight in on turbos being "non HAMB-friendly", and I was going to mention that exact same example. Superchargers have been around longer, but turbos date back farther than most people think. I would have loved to see the Mallicoat car run back in the day. I'll bet that car pulled hard on the top-end.
K.S. Pittman ran turbos after he left the gasser class - got a pic somewhere of the needle on his boost gage bent around the 30psi post. I believe tubos predate WWII, i recall turbos being on a B17(?) i looked at - the 'Lucky Lady' i think. They just don't lend themselves to hotrodding, horsepower isn't a big deal in a traditional hot rod is it (well, to me anyway).
I have a turbo set up from the 60's for a SBC. I was gunna toss it on my model a coupe once its down.
Ak Miller sold several turbo kits "back in the day" I sold several during the early and mid 70's when I was at M&M Speed in Sacramento most were so simple an install was only a half day job.
This Willy's ran turbos in 1965. *edit.. I see some of you guys have mentioned the brothers here. Reference material, I suppose.
I run several off topic late model Turbo engines.Being able to get 300-400hp out of a 1.8/2.0l 4 cylinder is a good thing. Guys building rods in the 40s would have killed for that stuff. Think about it 70 years before the 40s animal power was "traditional" Would love to bolt a couple of big turbos on a ls6. Building an Audi 2.7l v6 stroked to 3.0l and will run +500hp with big Tial turbos 600hp with Meth and high octane.
A little OT but my friend built an lq4 block.......LS just out of a truck. Twins and meth injection, made 1180 rwhp. Stock block, crank, and heads. pretty crazy what stock gm bits can do! http://www.svtperformance.com/forum...ass-sleeper-cream-dream-track-video-pics.html and vol 2.0 in the works now http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=432473 Again sorry for the OT links, just proof that the turbo deal is not a joke.
Is that one of crowers indy setups...? I've been researching for my turbo. Project....I know of a mild 383 that made over 1000 with 195 heads and 560 lift hyd roller...4400+ pound mid 90's chevy truck went 9.40
