Looks similar to my fellow club-mate's old '48! Matt had to sell it to buy his '36 5w and help pay for a house, but damn do we ever miss it. Reliable as hell and fun to cruise in.

  2. Graham was that the one that was for sale about a year ago? It was a really good price if it is the car I am thinking of.

Edit: LOL I guess it was. You changed your post before I finished mine.:D

I know this is totally stupid... but when did they start having single frenched antennas on cars? The reason I ask is that mine has one that the previous owner installed, and for some reason I never got rid of it.. I dont have the resources or skills to get rid of it at the moment... so if ANY SINGLE PERSON had a frenched antenna on a car built before say... 53.. it might ease my mind a bit. I know they were much more common in the over-the-top late 50s, but I was just wondering when they FIRST started being seen on customs.

I know this sounds stupid.. but I'm a traditional whore.

Yup, one and the same. It's a shame he had to part with it. It's already one of those "never shoulda done that" cars haha. But his '36 will kick some serious ass so I guess that'll help ease the pain.

Late 50's kustoms are still traditional kustoms. Just not in the context of THIS thread. It seems you tend to forget that, or fail to recognize it.

I know they're traditional..... I never said they werent. All I asked was if anyone had frenched antennas in the early 50s.. Thats also why I brought it up on this thread, which is about that era.

As always, Jeff, the merc is lookin' good .

Question for you, or anyone running a similar tail light setup, have you ever had and "close calls" with other (civilian :p) drivers?

  12. Thanks man^^^^ To be honest...Almost everytime I drive that car it is almost a close call but its not just cause of the tailights. The drivers around here are beyond words and all the recent smart phones have not helped.

Ah brutal. When I had a car on the road (jeez when was that, I can't even remember anymore) I was always paranoid I was going to get nailed. Almost happened once, guy was looking down at something coming up behind me at a light. I saw him in my mirror so I gunned it ahead halfway into the intersection. Good thing too, he was moving and would have done some serious damage (to me and the car)

They put a "distracted driving" law in effect this past fall in Alberta. No phones allowed anyore you have to have a hands-free.

Here is one of the most stunning pictures of any Mercury.Wally was just so heavy along with the Ayalas.

Old Soul.... they past that law here a while back but nobody really seems to care about it.

J.B, your car is pure kustom porn, but the bullets on your hubcaps disqualify it for that topic ! Not that it is ugly, but it's like a lake pipe, it's definitely not from the same period . It is strange you missed that detail ;)

Thanks, Zed. Both for your kind words about the car and also because I need someone to give me a kick in the butt sometimes too... :D

The reason I modified the Sombreros was that I was a bit bored with having them all stock. So I went for a special style, somewhere between the Lyon caps centre and the 1953 Cadillac (available in later half of 1952) centre bullet. But they are not made of original material from any of those two.

For next season I will have new hubcaps coming on. :)
I have these on my way home from the US right now. Since I haven't seen them in real life, I don't know if I can have them fit for 15" or if I will use 16". Would be very cool to have them for the 15", since they would probably fill out the entire centre of the rim.

  26. Wow that red Chevy is fantastic!

  27. Thanks fellas. There are so many bitchen rides on this post. I love the look of a period kustom. There are so many interpretations but to me they had so much flow and not to much flare. Less is more!

Slip Your car is a great inspiration for my own car. my one thing is the stainless around the windshield??? Is there a reason that you didnt put it on? Not Knocking you just curious to see your side of the story.

  29. slip, is your paint metallic? Any more pics of your car?

I will definitely swap on some pre 1953 hubcaps on my car when I have (1) finished the grille and (2) have the funds to buy some super nice caps...
