Empire whats the story on those? Do you know the photographers name or any info? They are really nice shots.

 

Clydes weapon of choice was the B.A.R. Bonnies was 20 gauge sawed off pump shotguns Clyde alsao sent Henry Ford a letter that he would only steal Ford V8s for get away cars because they had the power he needed to outrun the law. It's ironic that they both died at the hands of a marshal using a B.A.R. converted to a belt feed I think it was.

 

The C-130 is a S.T.O.L. aircraft, Short Take Off and Landing, man can they get off the ground in a short space so it is not a surprise that they could get off the deck of a carrier!
Airborne!! I think I have enough hours sitting in the back of one of them to fly around the world at least 5 or 6 times!
It's funny but with the boring hours in them and DHC Caribous you develop an odd affection for them, I miss the Caribou now that they are out of service. We got to jump out of them for the 'Retirement' ceremony.

Amazing. I thought I rememberd a JATO assisted photo of a C-130 launch of a carrier, but the article doesn't mention it. I have witnessed EA-3Bs operating on the USS Coral Sea, and they barely fit (they didn't call them whales for nothing!) but they were part of the airwing. To do the C-130 deal, the deck was cleared of all other aircraft, not too practical as only so many jets will fit in a CVs hangar bay and operating with a C-130 or U-2 would certainly limit your capabilities. I've also seen deck launched (no catapult assist) C-1s and was on the USS Ranger off San Diego the day we celebrated the 50th anniversary Doolittle Raid and the Ranger deck launched two B-25s! Again, the deck was clear of all other aircraft. That was very cool and it was followed by a good number of warbird fly-bys.

TRUE STORY: At the Detroit NSRA NATS,in 1972 the local TV reporter was going from car to car interviewing drivers, he stopped at this nice '34 with a greyhound radiator ornament & asking the owner about that "DOG", the owner said to get up close & look under the "DOG"--TV guy did & was squirted with a small tube of water from a windshield washer pump!!
TV guy was pissed (no pun intended) & left the scene of laughing street rodders!!!

USS New Jersey (BB-62), ("Big J" or "Black Dragon") is an Iowa-class battleship, and was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named in honor of the U.S. state of New Jersey. New Jersey earned more battle stars for combat actions than the other three completed Iowa-class battleships, and is the only U.S. battleship to provide gunfire support during the Vietnam War.
During World War II, New Jersey shelled targets on Guam and Okinawa, and screened aircraft carriers conducting raids in the Marshall islands. During the Korean War, she was involved in raids up and down the North Korean coast, after which she was decommissioned into the United States Navy reserve fleets, better known as the "mothball fleet". She was briefly reactivated in 1968 and sent to Vietnam to support U.S. troops before returning to the mothball fleet in 1969. Reactivated once more in the 1980s as part of the 600-ship Navy program, New Jersey was modernized to carry missiles and recommissioned for service. Hey Doc, That C-130 and the C-123 takeoff with the JATO pack is one FUN ride. Feels like you are going straight up like a NASA launch.

Indeed. And a big deal for the Navy and San Diego. The week prior to this launch, there were warbirds on the pier in front of the ship, open houses, static displays, ceremonies, etc. and a lot of civilians / vets were aboard for the big day. The B-25's were hoisted to the flight deck and the whole deal took place very near land at Pt. Loma. Being launched light, the bombers were airborne a lot faster than I expected and considering the Hornet was so much smaller than the Ranger, these restored planes almost made it look too easy. I have pix burried some place in my files taken from the flight deck and vultures row. I just gave my commerative patch of that day to one of my Uncle's old friends, who has been been a member of the Doolittle Raid group since it's inception. He goes to all the events, and is still crazy about the guys who did it. But not many of them are left and there may not be many more yearly events. Gary

These neat pics remind me of a book I had as a kid.

 

Siloam Springs Ok was home to my maternal greatgrands in the early 1900's. During the same time, over the state line, Siloam Springs Arkansas was home to my paternal g-grands .... neither family knew each other.

Flash forward 1947, San Diego CA , my soon to be dad starts dating this foxy babe that just moved in across the street, my soon to be Mom. .... small world! Funny thing, both my parents are native Californians.

Though this is a fine piece of artwork by one Henrietta Snowden,
it seems to sum up in a single image the soldier's hard life during
the COLD winter of 1950. Brrrr! Titled simply, "Withdrawal from
Kot'o-ri, 1950." But, hey. Just a "police action," right? Funny,
the PR spin Washington put on a conflict that cost 50,000 lives.
But, that was the beginning of the Cold War, and nobody wanted
a wider war so soon after WWII! Not to worry, vets! Not all of us

Any younger person wishing to better understand the whys and
wherefores of the Korean War will have an illuminating read at
that web address. It all makes sense, in a geo-political way. But
both civilians and ordinary enlisted folk had a hard time getting
their arms around it at the time. Strategically, it had more to do
with what the U.S.S.R. might do in post-war Europe!

 

After World War II, Marshall Plan aid to a devastated West Germany
enabled that country to surpass its prewar industrial production.
I say, God bless George Marshall. But a lot of people either forget
how generous the U.S. has always been in victory, or they don't
care because some find it fashionable to bash their own country.
