Ok I did a search and really did't find what I needed. So I am running a low h.p. small block chev. In my 31 and want to go with a 5 speed. So I figured I would turn to the powers of the HAMB to see what others have used. I have a line on a 98 out of a 4 cyl. But with the electronic speedo I am thinking I should hold out fOr an earlier one.. So enough babbling. What have you guys used with success, and what did you have to do to make it work, and clutch and pressure plate, throw out bearing info also. If this has been cover I could not find it, a link to it would rock. thanks
I used a 1991 S10 5 speed in my 1929 Model A RPU. I purchased the adapter from Bob Lewis in Munice ,Ind. If you need the ph. # I'll send it to you. It worked out good for me. Bob,
I have also heard that. But have heard that guys have used just the stock 5 speed right out of the s-10 without having to mix and match. Is using a Camaro trans just for strength? Or is there an other reason? Very curious.. Thanks
Starting around '88, V8 F bodies got the WC T-5s. Besides having a better syncro design and closer gear ratios than the S-10 T-5, WC transmissions have the first, second, and third gears riding on needle bearings. You also get a 26 spline input shaft, which opens up more clutch disc possibilities.
And they don't break as easy. We got a camero T-5 in the Ravens AD with an 88 S-10 tail shaft is works like a champ behind his small block and the truck is heavy before the load. I just don't think the S-10 ****** will hold up, maybe if you baby it.
The ratios of the gear set vary widely with application on BW T5 trannies. as PnB says, the WC (world cl***) units have advantages over the non-WC models. Check out www.britishV8.org website for a comprehensive chart of applications, gear set ratios and model ID numbers. Ray
Cool, thanks for the technical info on the trans internals. The older I get the more I baby my stuff, but that's because my kids are now eating up all my extra money, and don,t have the disposable income I used to have....lol.
The 4 cylinder ****** that i have has a very low first(4-1 ratio) and not much difference from 4th to 5th(.86-1 ratio). Normal driving i start out in 2nd shift to 3rd then skip 4th. Look for a better overdrive ratio .76 or higher. As far as breaking it i'm on my 4th year and have not killed it yet.
I am open to any and all ideas. I have a TH 350 in it now but want to switch to a 5 speed, because I am manual kinda guy, everything I own is a manual. I am hoping to do the swap for $500 and under. I think it's possible from what I am seeing price wise. I HOPE! I just don't want to throw good money to bad and buy a p.o.s.. Any and all input is welcome.
My father in law is running one from an 88 4 cyl S-10 behind a mild 305. Same as above, four years and still going.
This is why I love the HAMB . In under an hour I get the best advice from people who know. It's great when it works. I was waiting to get flamed for asking such a question since T5 and or S-10 is far from traditional. But I do drive the wheels off of my cars/trucks and it makes the most since to do this swap now instead of kicking myself in the **** when I finally get to drive it..
I have pedals already, I hope to sell of my auto trans here soon, so that's shaves a little off the top, that and having an uncle in the junkyard business helps on the cost of the trans. But you are speaking the truth..just a quick search has proven you right on your cost ***essment.
Check the numbers for a good ratio, some S10 t5's have a higher 5th gear.I can live with the low first but i would like a better overdrive. If you have a high geared rear end you may like the s10 ******.
My rear gear is a 3.73, I,m runing a 3.somthing lol gear in my 64 f-100 running a 292 and a 3 speed, and it. Cruises great at 70 to 75 with out killing the motor. So with the 16 7.50 'Stones in the back and a 5 speed with 3.73 gear it should cruise real nice...
Even those are bringing pretty good $$$ any more; it's hard to believe, but they're over 20 years old now.
It's important to check the "tag" on these ******s. Use Flat Ernie's thread to www.5speeds.com/t5/index.html and get the '1352' number on the ****** tag to ID which year and vehicle the ****** came from. You don't want to get the wrong one--don't ask how I know this!!!
Is there a t5 tailshaft with the forward shift location that the speedo gear on my 94 mustang wc t5 will work with?
