Vintage shots from days gone by!

I was there about 1951 or '52. My mothers aunt & uncle lived in Detroit. I think he worked for Chysler. We would usually visit them in the summer and I remember taking the boat over to the island, but don't recall much of anything else. Time has a way of doing that. I also remember Hudsons Dept. Store. Long gone.
We also went to Belle Isle. It was a really nice place also. Was in Detroit about 15 years ago riding with the Emergency Medical Services for a few days and rode over to Belle Isle...a total travesty. As is much of Detroit.

 

Thanks. I remember he and my family out there talking about both places, so you're probably right.
[edit: I spoke with my uncle who says that was probably the Oakland Roadster Show at the Cow Palace. Also they used to frequent a drag strip near Sacramento, but that was when they were running a new GTO. These shots look late 50's though, not mid-60's.]

25 missions as a Bombadier/Nav in the 416th, 9th AF.

Killed Nov '45 in New York, along with 3 other WWII veterans when the B25 he was in, while buzzing the runway 200 ft off the ground @ 270 mph, The B25 was struck by a P47. The pilot of the fighter couldn't see the bomber underneath him (P47s are BIG!) and dove to to the same flyby. (Something that all of the pilots were told NOT to do by the CO on the bus ride to the field. I have the investigation report) The fighter struck the wing of the bomber, flipped over on it's back on top of the bomber and they both crashed to the ground.

Searching the internet for information about my Uncle and the 416th, it is amazing to see what these guys did day in a day out without question and how many people they lost. If you look you will find someone you know...
...they may have never talked about it, but you can find a lot.

The Original as with many of the large pics you'll see are directly from the Library of congress.

I found that site myself some 10 years ago and had a website where I posted many of the b w pics we see in this thread, I shut the site down several years ago.

On the other hand, sites like Shorpy came alone a short few years ago and found the same large pics that I found back near the turn of the century.

Shorpy, since it's inception has been taking the nice Tiff high def large format pic right from the LOC and reselling them for good profit.


Many other sites like old motor just stamp their watermark on them and them pretend that they somehow own them by making it impossible to remove the watermark.

Those pics belong to the Library of Congress and ultimately to all US taxpayers.

Laying a watermark across a pretty part of the pic does not make it shorpy's or old motors or whoevers.

Back in the day I would download the shots and resize/crop them so they would fit in my albums (600 wide).
To this day, I continually see pictures that 10 years ago I cropped and resized to 600 wide but I never laid claim or placed a useless watermark across them.


Moral of the story, Almost every pic ever posted on shorpy is for sale by them yet you could go find it for free at YOUR LOC sans useless watermark across the center sections.

Thanks, Moe. You pretty much got my point and gave your view, which is my position and belief, as well. A year or two ago, I ran onto a thread where someone was giving a HAMBer hell for reposting "his" photos. Ryan Chochran (who's obviously looked into the legal aspects), simply told the complainant that he (the complainant) had not a leg to stand on -- and for the reasons you cite above.

For example, someone digitally enhances a Walker Evans or Dorthea Lang photo (done for the government, remember) and matts and frames the piece as fine art. I suppose, sure, they can sell the piece as fine art because of the "value-added" work -- yet they still don't own the Evans or Lang original photo. Those are in a real sense national treasures, owned by all citizens of the nation, just as national parks, monuments, even highways and public buildings are owned by the entire citizenry.

Wikipedia and similar organizations recently stymied (at least temporarily) legislative efforts to severely curtail freedom of informational exchange and sharing of material on the internet. And I'm not talking about piracy of audio and movies, either. The legislation was so broadly written that it could have panned out with withering effect, had it been approved.

Myself, I feel we regular HAMB citizens of this thread find and repost photos on this thread, in particular, for entertainment, mutual enjoyment, BECAUSE they stimulate conversation and build people's insight into history, cars included. The concept is called "fair use," and I believe it holds sway since we posters don't make money off the photos. And, that said, I firmly believe that it is fair to the source to note attribution, and doing a caption, as well, contributes to the educational and research value of the thread.

The roller coaster at Long Beach,Ca. was called the "CYCLONE", built in the 20's, it was a great thrill for all during WWII.----AND after too.

 

Those classic rides are wonderful. The Belmont Park "Giant Dipper" rollercoaster was built in 1925 and still running (after renovation in the early '90's) and the hand carved Merry-Go-Round Seaport Village was built in 1895....moved many times but still operating in San Diego. Those old wooden rollercoasters are still great for creakiness. My grandparents had a house trailer in Russells Point and been at the amusement park many times,I remember the last time I was in it half the rides were apart and not working and was looking a little rough (early 70s). Only the frame of the bridge that goes over the channel remains and condos are on the property now.

Agreed, I am aware and will try my best to find the history of each photo I post.

I post a few pics here..many from LOC and elsewhere and many that clearly state "no known restrictions" for reposts or reuse. I've been 'called out' on some for posting pics that 'belong' to others - and yes they do - as public domain it's my understanding they belong to all of us. If I see something that's copyrighted, I post a credit line at least once for the site. I think most of us do this stuff for entertainment and not for profit or gain other than to share common interests.
