I have to say that I make the mistake of pronouncing "probably" as " prolly" just about everyday of my life. But, it drives me nuts to see the word probably written as prolly. It also makes me want to close the teller window mid conversation when I hear someone say that this car just needs sanded and it just needs restored, instead of saying this car needs TO BE sanded and it needs TO BE restored.

"Crank start still here and functioning" Of good, I was worried it would need a new winding or to be retreaded...

It's all I can do to keep from ripping my own hair out sometimes when people talk like this, it's also quite annoying as text...

And the ones that use L33T speak or shrt frm for everything and get pissy at you for not know what the hell they are on about...

Now if'n you excse me, there some chicken that needs eated.

  8. People actually talk like this!? Sheesh, I thought it was just written stupidity.

  9. Needs eaten, not "need eated" I don't believe "eated" is a word.

The proper use of the connecting verb "to be" (and its many other) forms, is pretty illusive and ambiguous at best.

Think how Shakespeare feels about the language we use today,

Wherefore art thou mine "TO BE" ? It confounds me so, whence came this new language.

  10. Get thee thither, thou Rennish knave. :D

"Needs eaten" is just as wrong. They may both be words, but they don´t go together like that. "Needs eating" is ok. I can´t see any ambiguity in using "to be".

Just spit coffee out my nose.

We all misspell words at times but it looks like most dont even try to get it right. Thats why I have a dictionary at my compter.

  12. Funny, Shakespeare added a LOT of words to the English language himself.

As annoyed as I get watching what we do to the English language sometimes, I'm still in awe of how flexible and malleable it is and the way it constantly evolves ( not always for the better, granted).;)

Now I gottens me sum taterspuds that need eaten... uh hmmmm uh hmmm

add 'drop axle' to the list.

Unfortunately I must tell some of you that it's 'dropped axle'.

Spelling and the proper use of words is important or no one will understand each other

I've given up on correcting spelling, but I will occasionally poke at a misuse or malapropism if I can get a laugh out of it. I'm not a grammar-snob, but language is a tool of my trade, so I try to keep it sharp.

Face it, you're not going to teach proper english to the internet world, especially in forums where the members spent most of their time in shop class back in school. The only solution is for you to learn the language of the internet.

Maybe, but just go to your local auto parts and ask for casting plugs. Then you can stand there explaining the true use for those plugs while ten other people are served and leave, giving you a wide berth and puzzled look as they leave. :p

In Wisconsin a snowmobile is called a sled. In the U.P. they call them there snow machines. Yah der hey.

  19. Annoying are the people who insist on pronouncing the word height as heighth with a "th" lisp on the end. Its not - it rhymes with KITE with a pronounced "T" on the end. The Doctor doesn't check your heighth & weighth.

Numbers matching.....I'm guessing that some must be talking about the tag number matching the title/registration, 'cause NOTHING else is even close!!!

  21. I hear this one spoken more than written, but "ax" or "aks" in place of 'ask'. You'll mostly hear it on the Jerry Springer Show or Maury as in: "I ax my baby daddy all the time 'Why does you wants to go and sleep witchor own sister? - yoose juss nasty!' "

The two that irritate me the most are: rims for wheels, and a 72 Chevy "street rod".

May have been covered but how about "ready to restore" or "ready for restoration" - saw both in ads tonight.
Oh really? Are you sure it's ready? Or should I wait and let it rust in your field for 10 or 15 more years while it finishes getting ready.

And the one that gets me more than the threat to crush if it doesn't sell is the threat to restore it if it doesn't sell. "If it doesn't go by the end of the week, I'm tearing it down for a resto."
I know I always spend thousands of hours and dollars to restore a car just because I couldn't unload it.

  26. You didn't "seen" anything. You saw it. The use of "seen" in place of "saw" has become epidemic and it gives me the shits every time I hear it.

I see ALOT of ads for cars(I admit usually Hamb OT) with Inline 6 cyl. engines that are listed as V6's. Drives me nuts for some reason. Everytime I am thinking, shit man, you even took a picture of the engine!!!

  28. Needs " to be " seen - denotes future
    Have seen - denotes past
    Was seen - also past
All forms of the connection verb "to be"

I was going to mention that one after seeing isettajohn's post, but will add to that with height(h)and with Hearse(t)...

Rear tail lights (saw that tonight) front windshield, blinkers is a personal one, indicators or signal lights is what I call them, calling the roof or the headliner the ceiling, rear trunk...

I was selling an 83 Escort years ago, and the guy popped the hood and looked at the 1.6 inline 4 and asked if it was a V8... he was really offended that I laughed... I honestly thought he was joking.
