That just might be Grady Bryants car instead of Harrell.

I think Grady Bryant and Dickie Harrell were in cahouts on lots of race cars. Bryant's a Texas racer and I think Harrell lived in Texas for a while. Roger Caster also fit in somewhere with these two.

  14. I don't think Harrell ever lived in Texas. He was from New Mexico and was in California and Illinois before winding up in Kansas City. This Chevelle was definitely an "engine by" rather than any ownership. In '65 he would have been running his Nova:

But he also had this 427-powered Chevelle (although it's not clear whether he drove it or simply sponsored it):

Here's Caster/Bryant lined up against Joplin, MO's Terry Ivey:

Another month of beautiful race cars doing their thing back in the day. Some of these rides just flat out give me instant goose bumps!

    Yea,thanks for posting that video.
    Loved the staggered starts.
At our old track they had hash marks painted at the edge, each representing car lengths, the starter woud jump on the fender and wave the driver down to his correct mark.
Got a video being produced right now that shows an n/s 50 ford that was a regular being a dot in the distance, along with the flagman when he was running a 10 second car.
    Great times.

Looks like todays bracket racing to me only with car lengths instead of dial-ins in that video. But did you notice a couple cars still got beat by a bunch.

Back then the spots were off the national record for the class. Although a car might win it's class at an event, it might not be able to run close enough to the national record where the higher class car might be able to.

The little track I started at had hash marks and "spoted" starts were used in eliminator runs after the class eliminations. SS/S against a B/S or something or an A/Gas against a C/Gas. Now days if you can't run a second under your national record you will probably get beat in class.

  28. Yeah, but it's still first-to-the-line-wins and not the you-ran-too-fast-so-you-lose BS that is bracket racing. It wasn't uncommon in the match bash days for an injected car to get several lengths over a blown car to try to even things up and make it more entertaining for the paying public.

I friend of mine directed me to here to post these pics in the right section.

Here are pictures of "Cool Bus" Ken Nelson's first racecar with his first trophy believed to be taken in the late 50's. Don't have much more info than that. I was surprising to see the engine in the rear on something this old.

Crazy thing was, we found the trophy in his shop recently, but didn't know it's history until we seen the pic.
