this looks like it was shot in the days of single-lane qualifying.

three hours later, these stands and the fence would have been packed with people and they paid about $3 to be there.

Thanks for posting those.Sorry to hear of Kens passing a short time ago.Friend of mine drove a wheelie vehicle and is building a new one right now.
There were a few rear engine machines around back then. The 50's and early 60's were great for innovation. All kinds of combos.
Those ets must have been from an 1/8 mile track.

1/8 ? That's what I was thinking. Sure wished I would have asked him more questions.

Are you at liberty to say what kind of wheelstander your friends building? I like them, always have!!

Those had to have been 1/8 mile times.
Very cool car. My home track of Dover Dragstrip had some very cool mid engined dragsters back in the late '50's, early '60's too. Innovation and backyard engineering ruled!

The 8.20 and 6.70 on the back of the above picture are not ETs, they are tire sizes

Would have liked to have been old enough to race back then it would have been fun

  8. It was fun, more fun than you can imagine. Then money and computers came along and killed the fun. :(

    It appears you are correct.
Going back to when the nuns would beat me with rulers, box my ears, and sprinkle holy water on me to expel the demons during Reading Comp 101 and all other classes to pay attention.
    Didn't work.
    Good catch.

If Mr. Lowe doesn't mind, let me add that the factors he mentioned, killed the innovation mentioned above, that killed the fun.

Race cars, at all levels, evolved into over the counter cookie cutter cars void of individuality as a result of the marketeering of the sport.

*Show of hands; Who here can recall when a race car with a real metal car body from a Model T on, fabricated entirely with the owners own tools in his or a borrowed shop, totally with recycled components and materials with the exception of paint perhaps, that could be found competitive on a national level? When was the last time anyone saw an actual home made race car trailer? Tow bar ?? Ramp truck like Harrell's pictured earlier ???
God I miss drag racing; Tom S. in Tn.

When we bought the "Black Arrow" hemi 990 car from Doc Burgess, we flat towed it, with a tow bar behind my Mom's 440 GTX, ON ITS RACE SLICKS! This was an altered wheelbase, Hilborn injected car. Fun times, indeed...

I had a standing reservation for a tow bar from the local United Rent All for every Friday. The old clamp to the bumper deal.
Went to a NMW bar and tow hubs which I still have.

Hey Gary, you didn't buy Docs hauler when you got the Arrow?:)

Pic come out small but you get the idea.

Ha! Doc's old transporter! I remember that. I've got a picture of Dad somewhere with that truck and Doc in the picture from a Ciecil County FX meet...
That wasn't taken too long before we bought the car.

Here's one of my homemade trailers, Got a enclosed trailer with my first dragster but didn't have anything big enough to haul it, so I sold the trailer and built this fine piece kept extending it to match up to my longer cars as time went on, just traded for a 24 winabago going to gut the back end and put ramps in it for the new car , that way I have my hotel, tow truck and trailer all in one, just like the old days
