Massachusetts new emission testing for older hot rods.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 2many projects, Mar 6, 2012.

  1. Anyone on the HAMB heard the latest on the Massachusetts new emission testing to start next month on vintage vehicles.
I'm told you need documentation on the engine and need to do an emission test equal to that engine's guidlines for all newly registered vintage vehicles (Hot Rods Included) starting in April.
Any update on this pending legislation.?
3 of my cars are "Grand Fathered" but the 4th will be titled and registerd hopefully before next month.
My car's ages are from 1928 thru 1971.
Do I have plenty to worry about?

I haven't heard that either. The just made it so 1997 and down are exempt from emissions check.

  4. This feels like a rumor that comes out every few years. I'll keep my ears open since I'm right over the border.

  5. It was tossed out to me about a month ago by a fellow in the Mass Cruisers club.
The guy was just being helpful in giving me a "heads up" because I mentiond that I was going to wait 'till May or June to register my '47 with a late 2000's ZZ4 crate engine.
He mentioned this pending rule to urge me to get it titled, registered and state inspected before the axe falls.

Do you know what the cut-off year is that goes along with it?

  9. We'll be sittin' by the keyboard for an answer on this one.
That cut-off year concerns me if in fact there is a year (???)

  10. Good luck guys. This doesn't sound good. This has the smell of the legislation that California rodders are having to deal with. Sometimes the SEMA involvement is a mixed bag.

  11. lame ........ can we get a link ?? to something that states this . .... this state sucks . im moving . ....

Slick I think that this was in that piece on the sema legislation that was passed last year and you had posted previously. I belive after a certain date which must be coming up. I do not remember all the details.

Thanks for the link Roger. Here is an excerpt. April 30th is the cut-off date.

Under the new law, street rods and custom vehicles are exempted from emissions inspection requirements.; In a compromise made with the state air quality regulators, the measure also provides that specially constructed and replica vehicles which are registered on or before April 30, 2012 will be exempted from emissions inspection requirements.; Specially constructed and replica vehicles registered after April 30, 2012 will be subject to emission control requirements based on the model year and configuration of the engine installed, whether the engine is an original equipment manufacturer’s production engine, rebuilt engine or crate engine.
