  1. middle pic: early 50's DKW ad means 'the no-fuss two-strokers meet the four-strokers' (look at their angry piston-faces with all their beloved 'family'!) //for all who don't know DKW, german car factory 1928 - 1964, only 2stroke engines from start till end//straight 2/3, V4 and aftermarket V6 (really rare!). in 1928 the world's largest (!) factory in motorcycle sales and up to 500 and 600ccm supercharged racers, incredible loud with a minimum of silencers, heard 'em several times, ouch!// WHATIDYASAY?SCREAM!

the DKW factory always proclaimed that a twostroke engine has much less moving parts in it than the complex fourstrokes, no cam, valves, springs, chains..loved them, had some and worked on a dozens of 'em. but a flatty is a good ride for sure, i know, even if there is a lot of 'scrap' moving up'n'down, never would change!

left pic: ...and for Novadude55, they had some factory-built woodies, too! i know, someday, .O. ...LL. OWN . ....Y! (a riddle esp. for ya!) but there are only few left, i think about 3 to 5 woodies worldwide, it's time for you to start the collection :) love to send you some genuine wood from over here, they were made from beech and ash wood, i know an ashtree not far from here, send me your chainsaw and the race is on...

right pic: btw, my 59 DKW Junior had adjustable torsion springs in front, i once screwed it down to the ground, after that it wasn't drivable because of the front drive shafts (inner drive shaft u-joints didn't make it), but looked good with front bumper four inches over the floor..shit, made no pics of this.. sorry for gettin' a bit O.T. and i hope my english works enough to get me right, o.k.?

another sidestep: i can't open the photobucket-homepage, it's always saying 'access cancelled', wtf is it? i'd like to install a photobucket account, but how? to all PC pro's, please help.

Greets and a merry weekend, Carsten

  2. thanks for that, you're right, i've seen once a '47 Packard Henney Hearse over here, looked like a similar roofline, what a beauty but it was really knocked out! what huge and elegant cars!

Trabant used pretty much the same line re: 2-strokes. There's a great picture at the Trabbie museum in Dresden showing a line of Trabbies going down a city street in a telephoto view of one of the greatest clouds of blue/black smoke since the beginning of the industrial revolution. There's a sort of ambivalent notalgia about Trabants in the former E. Germany, but the memory is better than the reality.

  7. You're right, from today it looks like the former E.GE was the biggest s.m.o.g. on earth, but to defend the 2strokes a little bit, the mixture they burned in the east was a bunch of all combustible stuff they could get, with a suitable compression ratio you can run these engines at a mixture from 1:50 up to 1:100 (gas/oil) then the smoke wasn't much more than from a cam engine..i visited the GDR sev. times and always wondered if they put brown coal, donkey ordure or what else in there gas tanks, puuh, everything was blackened with soot, never wear white slacks there! always wanted to be born earlier, but not in this area!

  8. Your english is fine. Personally, the thumbnail pictures work out quite well too.

  9. Photobucket seems to be working fine for me, don't know what your problem might be.
But if you want to post larger pics, you can also put them in an album in your HAMB profile pages. After you post them in your album, there should be a link at the bottom [IMG****]. It works same as photobucket - copy the link and then paste it where you want to show the pic. There may be limits on how many you can post, I'm not sure.

  10. Yes, a one-of-a-million-face in it's time, look at the dash! it was a several-ply-veneer with a kind of shellac coating, nice to see and smell..and hard to restore (shit,I don't wanna be a stocker no more;)).. the white-on-black-plates are very special today for they were only used up to '56, hard to find some, because after '56 they all were changed to black-on-whites, but i have one from '48 with the letters B-H, which means british occupied Hamburg, times when whole Germany was split into allied forces zones, must have been severe times, at this point i hope my time machine stucks..:( but for every other reason i'll step back in to make a time travel!

Thanks, John, always love your avatar, lookes like a Brütsch Mopetta, isn't it? always been in Microcars, owned a unmolested '61 Goggo Coupe with 19500km on the odo and working preselect shift system, unique, fast changing gears and comfortable! always thought, the Beach Boys made their song 4-0-9 for this car, it is exactly 4.09 cui! (250ccm/13.6hp) but you could also step in the big blocks league with 300 or 400ccm, you know pro stock series heading deranging 19.8hp! helmets on, safety first at highest gear and 65mph!

Somehow they "forgot" about the "convenience" of having 3 sets of points, 3 coils, etc. An uncle of mine had one, and after the "joy" of tuning it up the second time got rid of it. Had a nice assortment of oddball cars (Peugeots, mostly) but stayed faithful to the 4 cycle type for the rest of his life. And he was a mechanic by trade.

  23. Didn't we put a man on the moon before we put wheels on luggage?

Thanks Dog, for posting those great pics.

Sock hops became popular because high school coaches had (have?) a fetish about protecting THEIR gym floor. No street shoes allowed -mine wouldn't even allow tennis shoes that had been worn outdoors.

Just thinking back to my "home town" Akron, NY. On Main street which was not all that long. 2 drug stores, 2 hardware stores, 3 insurance agencies, 3 bars, 2 barber shops, 3 restaurants, an ice cream parlor, a 5 & Dime, A furniture and TV store, a sub shop, pizza parlor, hobby shop, my mother's favorite, a women's clothing store, and my favorite the Oasis, a news and magazine store, where for many years I bought comic books, and later went into car magazines, but the transition included CARtoons, and HOT ROD Cartoons. there was more, and we even had a theater on a side street.

Many towns have already seen "Main Street" disapear as we knew it.
everything moved "out of the village" to strip malls, etc..........

But I remember well, going to town, my mother going shopping, me headed to my favorite haunts, and my dad "going for coffee" or as my mother sometimes called it, "feeding the ponies". in other words, going to see his bookie.

We had local car dealerships as well. both new and used. You could get anything and everything you needed "in town". And you knew by name, the person you dealt with. There were no Wal Marts etc.............

    Sorry, I digress..........

But one of the reasons, I like this thread so much, is what once was, and what we lost.

Thanks for posting what this street looks like today..........
