.. and while we are at it, rubber hoses please if you can. working on a car with everything braided steel. there are two braided steel hoses going across where the battery is. makes it tough to remove the battery. it was like the 4th of July the first time I took the battery out.

We used to call that stuff 'donkey ****', ...answer your question? The stainless stuff is beautiful and will endure, but not on a 'period' car.

  6. Ha I got a bag full of them still have the little metal hook on 'em so you can hang them on the display. I never have the one I need so I won't be running out of them any time soon. :D

I kinda dig em on the right car.

    They look racy.

I had trouble getting them to stay sealed. I switched to rubber.

Service stations (that is what they were then-not gas stations), used to all carry the Gates Vulcoflex hoses, or some other like brand such as Goodyear, Dayco, etc.
It was a practical thing, they could back in the day, outfit most any broken down car with a bad hose, with their limited supply of these universal type hoses, they had in stock.
I haven't ever got over the cheap/quick fix stigma they had.
I like the molded hoses, strictly for the clean look they have.
Use what you like, we aren't restorers here.

I think there is a big difference between "are they period correct", and "do they look good". Personally, I couldn't care less how many guys in the '50s used them, I'd rather find a set of molded hoses that work because they look better.

  12. Your mill looks good. I know this is just wrong but I still like the metal water lines on a flatty. Not always something that can be done but I just like the look fo the metal lines. Chrome of you got it.

But like I said your mill looks pretty damned sweet and the flex lines don't take a thing away from it.

These cheap hoses may be the reason that flat head Ford engines were prone to overheating and cracking the blocks.

As it did in the early-60's when I was a kid. Not "traditional"? Bull ****! Ugly? Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I think those metal wrapped things are ugly.

Next thing you know, we'll have to start having number's matching parts on our cars.

The stainless one works great on my 56 for the lower hose. I could never find a molded one that fit and there were too many bends for the rubber flex hoses.

I went to the local parts store last summer with some wire bent to the shape I needed. They let me go in the back to find some molded hoses that suited me. I found the ones I needed, with a couple extra bends here and there but I didnt care because I was just going to cut the sections off that I needed. When he rang me up, it was like $40 for molded upper and lower hoses for the 327 in my '53 chevy!!! I should have just got the flex stuff! Molded hoses seem like they have sky rocketed in price.

My coupe had those rubber flex hoses on it when I got it and they were one of the 1st things I changed. They looked a little sketchy and ugly too. I was able to find the right bends in the smooth rubber type. I had written down the part #s for future replacement but I'll be damned if I can find them now !!!

  24. ... am I the only one here that double-clamped my radiator hoses .... I always thought that looked ***s! .... I cant tell if I had picked up that habit at the time of this pic or not.

I won more then a few rod/custom car shows with flex hose in the late 1950s into the early 60's,but I had them dressed up a little with silver braded sewing trim running all around in the grove and ending under the hoseclamps at each end=looked pretty flashy a along with the pink angle hair with the red colored flashlights hiding under the hair down by the a-frames.
So I think they are great, used them way back and still do.
If you think there ugly, your just not a old hot rodder;)
