Looks like a '56 Special with a '55 Century front clip. '55 Century's used 4 port holes like the Roadmaster and the bodywork should bolt right up to a Special.

 

Arfons (he with his back to camera and foot on wheel in dark shirt) at Bristol in 1970. As it happened, I was standing next to Garlits and Karemesines and overheard "Big" say, while looking down at the "Monster"...."You've gotta' be outta' your damn mind to drive one of those things." This from a guy who was about to drive his first race since the Lion's blowup...in the same car stitched together (without the 2-sp tranny, of course) and walked off with low E.T. of the meet, IIRC. Have a lot of pics and good memories of that weekend. As a side note, Arfons ran this same car as a boat mounted on pontoons.

I don't remember the Wild Mouse at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, but when I worked near there in the mid-70's the scariest was the "Jet Star" with the steepest banking I'd ever experienced.

I worked at Hagler's market a block up from the Boardwalk on Riverside Av, and got to know a lot of the ride operators. Everyone got highly stressed during the height of the tourist season each summer, but you couldn't mistreat the tourists too much so we had to find ways to blow off steam.

In my case I had an arrangement with the guy who ran the Bumper Cars: he'd let me crash into tourists nonstop for my entire lunch hour. For FREE.

I pretty sure it was Arts nephew that ran the boat and he was killed doing it. The boat still had wheels the plan was it would ride on the wheels once it hit the right speed.It did ride on the tires as planned but he lost control of it and crashed.I was offered a ride in the top salt flats car but I had to get out there when he was running and the release forms were about as thick as the family bible!There are 2 cockpits and the passenger side had to be ballasted to keep the car running straight at speed.He did give a Hot Rod magazine writer a ride once.

 

That is correct. I never saw the boat run, myself. There is an interesting article with numerous pics of the configuration here: http://www.americanjetcars.com/arfons/art/art62.htm The car itself gave new meaning to the term "door slammer" for cars in the staging area. In fact, a couple of those cars were physically moved about from the jet blast, even though staging had made some allowances for clearance at the Bristol meet. There was another exhibition car there that was rocket powered, H2O2, I think. It caught fire on the line and the driver was pounding the roof with his fists. A quick thinking track marshall grabbed an axe and swung it at the enclosed cockpit plexi only inches in front of the driver's face and freed him without (incredibly) taking his face off. It was a very ballsy move.

This is a Fairchild F-27 Friendship, manufactured in Hagerstown,Maryland in the late 1950's. It was a very good modern aircraft,but was way ahead of the times, with very efficent Turbo Prop Rolls Royce engines, but all or most all the Airlines wanted to go with the non prop full jet engines in those days......... Tucker #1041 is alive and well. The fire occurred soon after the Sutro Baths were shut down for good in 1966 and while it was in the process of being demolished.

Tucker #1041 was sold at auction with other Sutro items in 1970 for $5,000.

 

Love the story, that would be fun to smash em up all day. The Wild Mouse over looked that area where they had the lower level with the cars and train. Now that I think about it, Im not sure if it was waterslides or a log ride that replaced it.

 

My grandfather (John Henry Dorrough) delivering mail around 1910-12 in Cullman, AL. Mom told me he delivered mail in a horse and buggy because the roads were so bad back then.

 

I had one of those in High School, a maroon one with a white top.

My brother had a black one just like it. He paid $25.00 for it back in the early 70s, drove it for two years, then sold it for $100. He then bought a 71 Vega Hatchback for $100 and drove it for five years.

He spent $25.00, got seven years of driving, and never did more than gas and oil. That's about $3.50 per year. I've never had that kind of luck with cars.
