Follow me along and help me get a 34 roadster ready for a wedding!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris, Jan 14, 2012.

  1. Tonight I get home from work and had some goodies waiting for me from the mail man!!!

First was a bitchin ol clock mirror I bought from a fella in Hawaii on Fordbarn. I just dig shit like this! Mounted it and pulled the string- it works very well! Now I have no excuse to be late for the wedding except a hangover :D

Next box was a set of real McCoy 50's "baldy" hub caps. I have wanted a set for this car before I even owned it. I planned on running a set on my old 34 roadster, and it took until just now to get em. LSGUN had a set and it took me a couple weeks of pleading to get them- thanks again man they are just what I wanted and the condition is great! I LOVE how deep these suckers stick out!!

Anyways, got right to work grinding the axle bosses down on that A axle. I figured it would take a 1/2 hour or so to do...man was I wrong. I bet I have 2 hours into grinding them down. But I was going nice and steady and kept switching spots so it would not get too hot. Either way, got that job done (thank goodness!) and slid it under the car. This axle is about 3/4" less drop then the axle I had before, but I love the lines of it and I am working on the front spring to make up for it. The drop measures right at 4" total.

I love the mirror!! I bought an aftermarket one still in the box 25 years ago. Mine has a round face and a winding stem like a watch. Not nearly as cool looking as yours but I love it. It's currently in my 34 P/U.

I've got a set of those caps and can't get 'em to pop on the damn wheel! Look great on there Chris.

  7. Thanks guys! This thing is finally starting to mesh together as a whole car, like I can now see how the final product is going to look. This car is becoming my favorite, too! I LOVE small details on cars, and this one has quite a few.

Still waiting for the rear spring, the stupid sandblaster "forgot" about it and it should be done this week. Then we can see the final stance!! But for now I have some stuff I need to paint and start assembling the front end for good.

Looks damn good as is. I can't wait to see it when you get the stance dialed in. How much lower do you want the front?

Hey! I'm glad you got that mirror. I saw that thing and thought it was really cool. Looks right at home in the roadster!

When you say grinding the axle bosses, you talking about where the wishbone mounts because it's 2 inch on a 33-34, and 2 1/4 on a Model A?

The "Baldy's" rule. I have a set I bought out at the Father's Day show last year. They are patiently waiting to go on the 5W. I loved the look on Ganahl's roadster and just had to have them for my car. Your roadster is looking tits!

  13. inch or so, just reversing the eye.

  14. Exactly. Otherwise they are pretty much the same axle. A for mystery why A and 37-up were 2 1/4" and 32-36 was 2". Regardless, a little trimming and it slipped right in.

  15. Yeah, it's weird how when you notice em, they just stick out! The car that stuck me on em was Aaron Kahan from the Chopper's 32 5W. I like stuff that you can't just order from from a catalog or whatever.

    Except for your steering arm...

Just kidding. that was pretty much the standard back then even though when I see it I associate it with Speedway.

  17. I had a bitchin old chrome one but it was really short...must have been off a car with a stock height axle. I'm gonna doll up my Chinese Speedway one though :D

Send it with your shifter after you "doll it up" while you're working on those patch panels.

so what car did that mirror originally come out of?...or is it an aftermarket accessory item from back then?

  21. Larry, it was just aftermarket, although I think Ford had some that were authorized accesorys

I think the orig auth Ford ones were"Sandoz" mfg. Could be wrong though. That is a good looking mirror. Car is coming along real nice.

  23. Today I got some goodies back from the platers! It was like Christmas all over again! This is a first batch, I have some other small odds and ends to get done. Anyways, just plugged a long doing some boring stuff tonight.

Plated parts look great! Do you do a lot of the "prep" work to keep costs down? If so, what's involved? Sanding? What grit paper?

Wow you must be loaded to chrome all that.....unless you have a Chrome Fairy.

  28. No, I just dumped it off and left them deal with it.

  29. Nope, they are hydraulic.
