Maybe off topic, but talking to one of the guys I work with and we got on the subject of old cars. Back in the day his grandpa ordered a Tucker, he said they shipped you the luggage that fit in the car, then you got the car later. He got the luggage and in the mean time tucker went out of business and he never got the car. Both of use got to wondering, How "rare" would something like this be?? (still in his attic) Are there a fair amount of situations like this out there, or more of a one off deal? FYI his grandpa said they were $2800 new in 47'.
true but not accurate. If you saw the movie you know Preston did everything he could to keep afloat. the big three shut him out. he was taking deposits from anyone that wanted a tucker. My Uncle sent in $500 deposit and recieved as a gift Tucker Luggage. nothing fitting just 3 pieces that have Tucker Motor Car Co. in Gold print. I guess they would fit somewhere. My Aunt gave them to me years ago but I've never picked them up
Tucker did the same with the radio. As a result there are more radios and luggage than Tuckers. Nothing to get rich on but still a neat collectible.
I just got done watching a you tube vid. Dave cammack, only collector that has 3 of 43 left. He said you bought a radio, seat covers or the luggage. Huh-cool, just one of those conversations that make you go do some research. Pretty neat. I saw the movie but it was Awhile ago.
There is an old building in downtown BeechGrove Indiana that was the local Tucker dealer around here. Two brothers still operate a repair shop out of the building. They have Tucker buisness cards, a poster and some other stuff hanging on the wall that has their address on them as proof. Their father was friends with the dealer and passed along some cool stories to the sons. I had been in there several times but only noticed the poster a couple of months ago.
The deal was if you ordered a Tucker, and bought luggage, radio, or seat covers you got a preferred place on the waiting list. Tucker did this when they were hurting for money and the SEC cracked down on stock sales. There is nothing wrong in a car company selling car parts and accessories. The luggage was made specifically to fit in the front trunk of the Tucker, which was rather small. There are still a lot of luggage, radios and seat covers around. They turn up from time to time and have a certain collector value but are not as rare as the cars.
I'm not sure a movie is the best source for historically accurate information. There is quite a mythology that has built up around the Tucker. I think there are quite a few radios floating around. Not sure there is as much of the luggage.
