Projects 59 El Camino.. Part Two

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by J.Fishbeck, Nov 10, 2011.

  1. I'd trade all those pink slips for more time with Dad.. but I'm good!

  2. So today I finally 'MADE' myself sit down and figure out the issues I was having with dads sewing machine. The thread just kept breaking, so I changed the needle and kept re-reading the manual. But everything was in order.. then I "finally" seen where the needle had been rubbing on the vibrating foot and shredding the thread. Once I had it apart, I understood how to correct the problem.

You can see where the thread kept breaking. Then I started doing donuts once it was up and running correctly.

Practicing my french seams. The first one is quite ugly

    Second attempt on the right.

Still horrible, but not bad for a second try. Then on to the next drill

With shitty weather coming, it'll give me plenty of time to be practicing. Cos I need LOTS more seat time!

Wow, Dad had a walking foot sewing machine? Niiiiice. Now all you need is a chrome tank out back to be totally in house.

  4. We used to use Denver Mullins shop for our chrome work. Then my dad started working with Appollonio at AB Chrome & Polishing. My dad did it all.. not to many can say that! He was so amazing

    Patterns

Tape for reference where the half inch mark is from the needle.

Practicing sewing up beading seams. I hate the way they look, but you gots to do it! I'm not hating my beading seams, just beading in general! French seams look so much better!!

Sewed up a single beading. But that ends up being the long way around

This way brings it down to two steps instead of three.

Then you sew on the second piece

    Practice, practice, practice

Gato sat right there with me, just like she did with my dad.. when he was doing upholstery!

Holy shit Jay! It's been 20 year's since I've heard anyone mention Appollonio. I use to do alot of work for a guy in Riverside that had several cars. Anyway's, I remeber going to Appollonio house to drop off and pick up the chrome work for a 50 Chevy. He would do all the prep work at his house and the dipping at work if I remember correctly. I'm I talking about the same person? Location I don't remember. Keep up the practice, your doing good.

Great prices but he doesn't do perfect work. I go to Sihiling if I need something flawless. His son works for Nasa and his daughter has been all over the world. My dad and him were friends. Dad learned a lot from him an of course it trickled down to me

It's the truth man, people that have pets are healthier, I love nothing more than watching my chihuahuas play and the occasional time my cat lets me pet her.

  13. I hear fish do the same thing. I just don't like carrying my fish bowls around with me, but when I do..

Chihuahuas are the best of both worlds.. small like a cat but with an attitude, that's ten feet tall!

I figured out how to post youtube videos.. YES!

    Lol, that's cool Jay

  15. It should've been a hint when you didn't see any light coming from the machine! An you have a lawyer? Scared of you

  16. Picked up some of the chrome, earlier. The bumper ends for the couch came out alright

Jay, oil slick, caltrop ejector, or flame thrower behind that solenoid operated taillight?

I'm actually guessing there is a gas tank filler neck in there...

I'm a big fan of pussy too.

  18. Yep, it's the fuel filler neck in there. It's actually a window regulator that automates the whole thing. It needs a spring incorportated & some more time invested, so it's not all "clumsy & clunky". It's not even on my "list" of things to do, cos I'm constantly reminded every time I walk passed. You can't help but see it

  19. A good friend of mine just moved his family into a new place, just outside of Redlands. So I'm wondering why his address sounds sort of familiar, as he's telling me directions. Then when I'm almost there, I put things together.. He's moved in across the street from a retired body shop mgr, I've come to know. I was given his number through a mutual friend, being that he had just built and sold a 59 El Camino, and would most definitely have extra parts. I bought my t/gate from him and a bunch of other pieces I needed. When I seen him yesterday, he still had the original t/light lenses that I didn't want since I have new ones. He's never sold 'em.. so he gave them to me. Then he reaffirmed my worst nightmares. The 59 he built & sold was stolen from the Home Depot parking lot. I now know I can't leave this thing out of my sight. I don't care, I guess I am "that guy"

Nice build Jay. Certainly one to be proud of and enjoy.

  21. Thanks. I was living in Ossining in 07-08. Working as a booking agent at American Talent Agency. Looking out my bedroom window I seen Sing-Sing prison and the Hudson River. Came back to be around dad.

  22. My 55's Dbl Hump heads. They'll be machined for 2.02/1.6s. Curious what the machine shop does when they un-shroud the combustion chamber for the bigger valve.

Took down the high spots, stopping when the dark of the low area, disappeared. Now I have to dig out the tool & rolls of emery cloth to hit the area around the guides. Plus the center of the runners.

Lousy weather, today. So I took advantage of the time. This is my first time doing this.

Cleaned up the exhaust ports, just for practice. Street car, so it won't really benefit from it anyway. I've paid most of my attention to blending or smoothing all the short sides of the runners

  23. It's kinda like polishing american torque thrust wheels.

  24. Be careful around those valve seats..... :)

  25. I plan on using the high speed drill with the emery rolls, while taking my time. Shouldn't take that much to just clean em up

  26. I'm guessing this thing's called a 'bobbin-filler', since it.. fills bobbins. But truthfully I don't know. I just figured out how to use it, third times a charm. I never really paid close enough attention, when Pops was doing it when I was kid.
