blown oil filter - what do you use?

    I have seen 3 Frams do that and a couple more I have looked at, developed strange pock mark kinda holes in the gasket face on my racecars. I stopped using them after the 2nd one let loose. No they were not double stacked and the ones I saw with little holes forming on the seal face just scared the heck out of me. I have a few frams laying around my race trailer. I give em to the "special" friends at the track that still use them after theirs have dumped the oil. I will never recommend a fram again.

    Filters fail all the time, and doesn't matter who makes them. Quality control only samples a percentage and as long as the sample is ok they keep producing them.
    The true test of the quality of the filter is to cut them open, and stretch out the paper and inspect it for flaws and length. We cut open every filter that comes through our heavy equipment shop to inspect for debris as part of our oil sampling and tracking process.
    Cut open a Wix and a Fram, stretch out the paper and you will never use Fram again. They have roughly half the amount of filter media as the others. This means it will plug and cause the bypass to open much sooner which lets the debris flow right to the bearings.

    On the other hand I have seen glue joints (where the paper is glued to itself) on many brands of filters that have separated allowing the oil or fuel to bypass the media altogether. We use Wix because the failure rate is the lowest of the brands we have tried.

    WIX or the NAPA GOLD[made by WIX] in ALL my cars especially the race car!! Never any issues in over 20+ years. ROY.

    Are you sure they make all the filters in Canada? Or is it the HP line? Honeywell isn't above using low bidders either!

    What kind of oil pressure is it running?Check to see if the bypass valve is stuck or sticking(if it has one).My Big Block Chevy had same issue, it was the bypass valve stuck . Too much oil pressure build up and the oil will find the weak spot to exit. Usually the oil filter gasket!I Run only Moroso filters. 85 to 100#'s of pressure= no problems.

    Might be the angle. I sure didn't get that impression yesterday when I pulled it (it really seemed like one piece that was coming apart), but I'll confirm when I get home and own up to it if that's the case! :eek:
     
  8. First off, I don't see Fram anywhere on the car.

    Secondly, you are running a $100,000.00 + dollar engine in a million dollar + race and you're gonna chance it with "supposively" inferior parts???

    I don't think so!

    This is CLEARLY a "PH" filter NOT an "HP" filter. The bed-liner material on the bottom proves that. All "HP" filters are made in the USA in Charlotte, NC.

    If you need to see what an "HP" filter looks like reference the JFR engine.

    Comparing a "PH" filter to an "HP" filter is like comparing a '59 Caddy Eldo to a VW Beetle.

  10. I see the bulge in the gasket in the first picture but I couldn't understand what I was seeing in the second picture. It is clearly not the gasket because of the thickness of it and the parting line ... had me confused. Now it makes sense (as others have posted), based on the second pic it appears to clearly be two gaskets stacked. I was told years ago to make sure the first gasket comes off with the old filter (and to remove it if it is stuck to the block) so I have never actually seen it done, but I'd bet money that is what we are seeing in the second pic.

    Get stuffed. That was simply my response to someone who questioned the canadian manufacture. I never SAID it was a fucking "HP" filter.

    Look again at the gaskets, looks like there is two. It's common for the old gasket to stick to the engine unnoticed and the new filter installed on top. No matter how tight you get it, it is going to leak and it is not the filter's fault.

    Didn't Fram, and likely others, have a problem with phony "Fram" filters, from some offshore makers? A question....what is the difference between Fram "PH" item, vs; "HP" ? I hav never seen those,......

  15. Everything is different between the two.

    The HP has a heavier gauge steel shell, better valving, better media, better sealing gasket, etc.

    I've been trying to find an exploded view picture to post but have not found one yet. I will keep looking but if I can't find one I have an old filter I can cut open and take pics.

    Back in the late 1970s a friend lost en engine in his BMW due to a faulty FRAM oil filter. There was a small pinhole in the filter that the paint covered. After a while the paint blew out and the oil followed. He couldn't stop the engine before it was ruined. The good news was that FRAM footed the entire bill for the new engine.

    You were right. :(

    The two gaskets were practically fused together. So it's not the filter, it's me.

    I can't remember when, but I am sure I have done the same thing at some point!

    The good news is, you caught it early and the engine should be fine. One issue resolved!

    Always have used Wix but the last Wix I bought for the Allison tranny in my O/T truck was made in China and cost almost twice as much as a factory Allison filter made in America.

    I've thought this as well from my observation and comparison only, but never had anyone verify it.

    How about Fleet Guard? I see them everywhere in trucking and ag shops, even on operators private cars.

    I know from my experience when I was still road racing motorcycles, there was a time in the early 90's where Fram filters were outlawed on the track for a couple of the sanctioning bodies, the threads would fail and they would blow off. I always have this in my mind and when there started being a few instances car related I just quit using them at all.
