I had a 66 Caddy ragtop that was stolen and found a year later just minutes from paint (was already in the booth, paint was being mixed when cops showed up) when I got it back I was checking out the bodywork before we continued, the right 1/4 had been caved (in after it was stolen) and they filled it with Bondo. We saw it from inside the trunk, the bondo was over 8" deep in one place! The Bondo had to cost more than the metalwork. We just cut the section out rather than try to remove it all. It weighed over 40lbs. I also bought an Amphicar that turned out to have been sandblasted poorly, warping the entire hull badly. So what to do? Yup, they must have gotton out the snow shovels and trowels. Bondo over every square inch ranging from 1/2" to 4" deep! I removed it all and straightened it all out properly. That Amphicar then became "Bondo, James Bondo Agent 770" (amphicar model # is 770)
I found an Amphicar in of all places in Karachi, Pakistan in 1985, it was for sale for $1,000, it was 100% rust free, as in zero! It was severely weather beaten though, top, interior, weatherstripping all shot, my dad said "no' shame.
Damn, sorry to hear about the crash Hope you're feelin better... Can't wait to see more progress on this build.
My favorite was grinding the rust on my Stude fender and pulling out a scotch brite pad. I also found asphalt roof tiles in the cab corners of my 61 Chevy. Ironically, i just cut up a car i did about 12 years ago-This thing was compressed rust to begin with, so I didn't care. I used spray foam, covered with Kitty Hair glass, and then Bondo. After sitting 10 years by the water-that was the strongest part of the car.
I know this is a 2 year old post, but the whole time I was looking at that link, my jaw just kept dropping further and further. Dear sweet 6lb8oz baby jesus I hope someone has saved that car.
Years ago I was taking the front fenders off of a car to do some resto work. The left fender was no problem, but when I went to remove the right fender I couldn't hardly lift it. A buddy helped me lift it off and lay it down. Once we removed the inner fender we discovered a perfect imprint of the side of a SBC. The fender had caved in where it looked like the engine had fallen on it when they pulled it. My guess, two to three cans of bondo fixed that little problem.
I put a 60 Caddy cowl in the old girl, with a tiny bit of chopping it fits like a glove. The chrome bill will be heavy on this one. Even the mounting holes match up
How did you come up with that? I have been keeping my eyes open for a 60 Chevy piece, they have a nice concave detail and are a bolt in. Did you get any bezel's to go around the wiper arms with it?
No bezels, they are different than a Chevy, I'm eying a set on fleaBay. There was a 60 Caddy flat top showed up at our show and I was looking at it and I thought it might work, I just took a chance and my instincts were right. I have a perfect 59 Chevy cowl I'll sell you if you need one.
Oh man it does, never thought about that, but we have a problem, I just bought something that could interrupt the flow.
I have a good 59 cowl, looking for a 60.. I did my rear window under the trim drain fix this weekend, check it out.
flt-bllk, your truck is so nice, everything was gone around my back window, just a mess. Doing the final blocking now, guide coat is on, this should be it, then sealer and paint.
The hood was a lot of work, but it's finally filled and has several coats of high build primer on it, I'll block it tonight. I wish I could work on it all weekend but I have to go work in Las Vegas.
