This f100 runs hot according to the stock temp gauge. Trying to figure somethings out and the neighbor thought the fan was pointing the wrong way? I thought, "why and how would it be pointing the wrong way?" but figured I'd post a picture just to be sure.. Thanks in advance
Fire it up and drop a tissue in front of the rad. It sucks in to the rad, your good to go. Blows the tissue away. You've got it on backwards.
multi blade fan, shroud, correct thermostat, good hoses, etc will help too. post more pics of engine/truck
The angle would be the same either way but the scooped ends would catch more air if it was flipped. A 1" longer spacer may help a little too.
that fan is on the correct way. The gage could be inaccurate, the engine or radiator could be plugged, thermostat could be weak, and it probably could use a fan shroud.
New thermostat and radiator cap couldn't hurt. Flush out the cooling system and fill with proper coolant mix.
I keep an aftermarket temp gauge in my toolbox that I know is good just for these occasions. it is always good to get a second opinion before you start spending a bunch of money on parts you might not need.
Is the temp fine on the hi-way? Then air flow would be key. The big three (brakes, fuel, cooling) systems are priority when resurrecting the old rides. Go through them completely. No band-aids. Yes a 1" spacer should go on it too.
If it's much more than an inch from the radiator, it's not going to suck very much air through it. Also, as said before, a shroud would help tremendously. Double check your spacing. BTW, it's mounted correctly.
Agree with Squirrel..... and add a shroud. Did those Ford trucks come with a "pan" under the front of the engine? (Anyone?) '54 thru '56 pass cars had one...to keep the under car airflow from moving up behind the radiator. Most of those were removed during generator replacement, and many never reinstalled. 4TTRUK
y'all are wonderful. I live near LMC, so I use their parts catalog like a bible, but don't see a shroud made for the '59. I assume these are easy to construct so maybe I'll try that. As far as the spacers, where does one find those? Here's another phone pic.
I look in my little cardboard box that says "fan spacers" where I put all the spacers I take off of cars. You may not have one of those....
Take a tape measure to a pick-a-part salvage yard, and you can probably find an OEM fan shroud that is close enough to adapt to your truck (donor vehicle with a radiator core close to the size of the one in your truck). Also check your hoses--aging hoses could be collapsing and restricting flow, or thermostat could be bad. You will be surprised at how much the fan shroud helps--it's good to run one even if the lack of one is not causing your current problem. The shroud will make the fan pull more air through the radiator.
One of our most vaunted tech guys here on the board accidently put a reverse rotation fan on the 427 Chevy in his then rough and ready '63 Merc truck many years back. Had some serious problems with over heating for a few days before he finally realized his mistake... I would tell you who it is but I just don't feel it would be right to mention ElPolacko's name here at this time! Nothing like the feeling of throwing good friend under the buss...
Is it getting hot at slow or high speed slow speed usally not enough air flow high speed the radiator. Oh and turning the fan around will not change the direction of air flow just make less efficient.
According to the factory gauge, it gets hot just sitting there at idle. I then went and rode with the wifey to see if it would get hot quicker while riding around in stop n' go, or at higher speeds with less traffic lights and signs. Made no difference. The needle would rise past the H in about 20 minutes.
