who sells the "two 2barrels on a 4 barrel" adaptor plate?

I must be searching with the wrong words. What are these called? Where its a cast aluminum (usually) plat that bolts to your 4 barrel intake and you can use two 3 bolt carbs on it.

What words should i be looking for?, or heck, if youve got any links id be appreciative.

Because it's half-azzed. If you have something common, not that hard to get the right manifold. Only if it's a real odd/off brand is it somewhat acceptable.

Personally id love to find a two four barrel intake eventually, run two carbs on each. But thats.. not in the near future. I figured running two 2barrels would be an interesting look and step in the right direction. Ive already a set of cal custom finned aluminum valve covers and old zoomy headers on her.

 

Run 'em and do a tech. Nobody ever says how they work!

 

Running that set up seems to be a cheesy subs***ute for the real deal, but if the carbs are calibrated correctly and one of the pair linked to kick in like a secondary on a 4 barrel, I can't see where it would be much different. Still, a 4 barrel seems simpler and better performing.

Yep, no question the haters will come out of the woodwork on this one, but like anything else on a car it is a personal decision. I can look at any other car and find something I personally wouldn't do, but so what ?

I've run one of these adapter setups on my 23 and there is no denying that NOTHING works as well as one properly sized four barrel carb (we won't include fuel injection into this discussion). But a single four barrel sitting all alone on a hoodless hot rod just looks lonely to me. (See, I am a hater on some things too.) In some respects trips and two fours have been done and done again, so even they are becoming p***e' to a point. Putting one of these adapters with a couple of Stombergs or Rochesters on top is not only a little different, but traditional. If you don't believe that, check out any one of a zillion ads in the little books and hot rod magazines from back then.

I could have afforded to spend the money to buy a regular tripower or two four manifold for my 23, and have one of each on my 27 and my rpu project, but I wanted something unique. That is why I went to the Vintage Speed setup, and it changed the complexion of the car completely.

If we all liked the same things this would be a pretty damn boring hobby.

I had thought about doing it on my car so I can keep the blower but have something a little different than a single 4BBL.

I guess I'd better scratch that idea so I can be cool!

I ran one for a while. They do look different, got a lot of looks with it. The only downsides were the CFM rating of the carbs (97's) were too low for the size of my motor. So it didn't have much power out of the hole or merging on to on ramps. Keep in mind that with non-progressive linkage, you will have **** for mileage since its a 4 barrel on all the time. But then again, most of us don't watch their hot rod's mileage that closely.

 

Run the adapter on your 351w because you will never find a three bolt carb. manifold for that application. Progessive linkage is the only way to go. I run two Rochester 2-G carbs. on an Edmunds manifold on my Stude 289 with progressive linkage, and get good gas mileage just running on the one two barrel most of the time.

well there was a company making 3x2 intakes for the sbf but they started at 990.. about 850 out of my price range right now.

I figure ill pick up one of these adaptors and put two 2 barrels on it. My car isnt being built hot, its just a 39 plymouth 4 door thats been turned into a 2 door, suicide doors, roadster. Its what i could afford when i wanted a roadster. I got this great (and free!) 27k original miles 1979 351w (i havent had the balls to see how pitifully detuned they were by then), but with a rv cam, some bigger jets in the 94's, it should have some "get up and go".

Thanks for the help guys. I didnt realize getting the two carbs in sync would be so tough, but ive got more time than money and figure i can srew with them as needed.

 

Hey, malaguena, that's the beauty of running progressive linkage, it's that you don't have to worry about syncing them.

I used to run two Stromberg WWs on a common linkage, and it was a h***le to get em' in sync.

I prefer to increase performance, not decrease it. And it's a step back for performance. But I guess you're just after a look.

 

I think it's more like using what he's got on hand. He'll get a "look", but at today's gas prices, he may actually save a little running on one two barrel carb.

Remember that 97's/94's are about 125 cfm each, totsling 250 cfm. The smallest 4bbl I know of is a Holley 390 cfm. You will be seriously under-carburated. That's OK for a custom that is used just for cruisin' but for more performance? I don't think so.

You could use a set of port plates and run a 302 intake, which are available, but they really choke the engine down....

Just get a decent vintage air cleaner and let it ride... The adapter plates remind me of the Garlits fake injector thingy... just cheesey. If you are machine shop friendly, Samiyam did weld up a 4bbl and mill his own intake holes on the Roach Rod a hundred years ago, but it was a fairly involved process.

By the time you finnagle a multi 2bbl set up and adapters and carbs, you could probably score a used 2x4 setup somewhere.

Simplest, is just run a 4 barrel and cover it up with a cool air cleaner ***embly...

Dang that old caddy looks good.

I dunno, i might just put a 2" carb spacer to lift it a tad and use a cool air cleaner. One day ill be able to pick up a twin 4barrel high rise to run on her. Be able to build her up nice and hot.

Right now im concerned with getting her up and driving, looking good.
