Vintage shots from days gone by!

Well the Cosmo is a '49. Hunt Spiller Mfg appears to be still in existence in Reno, NV. I guess the photo date could be anywhere from early '50's to early '60's. Maybe I am missing something.

I remember people saying that about Huntington, didnt know why, thanks for the info Don.. My brother and I used to get dropped off @ the pier by my parents and then they went shopping. We didnt need babysitters while we were at the pier. 8 and 10 yrs old we were at the time.. We used to get tar all over our feet and had to wash it off with paint thinner before getting in the car to go home. When we got older my brother and I we walked and then rode bikes when we got them, from Santa Ana(McFadden and Euclid) down to Brookhurst and then down to HB State Beach, and sometimes the pier.. we collected pop bottles on the way there and cashed them in for lunch at Taco Bell, or the Golden Bear, did the same on the way back home, used to buy kits candy taffee for 1Cent, all kinds of other neat candy before going home and then mom wondered why we werent hungry. lol

I remember them too. The tops of my feet are wincing in remembrance. Seems like they had a wire deal that would always come undone.

 

Yeah, it was kinda like a slide-zipper thingy. Pinched the tops of my feet too, and hurt like crazy.

Yep, I had a pair of those blasted things. Mom worked for a shoe company and brought home all kinds of weird-ass shoes home for me. Some I liked, but for the most part, they didn't look like what most of the other kids wore. I don't remember anyone saying too much about these, but she brought home another pair that were lace-ups and they had thick rubbery soles. On Sundays she'd comb my hair into a big tall pompadour and then spray the shit down with Aqua-Net. The boys in my Sunday School class saw my new thick-soled shoes, noticed how tall my hair was and said I looked like a rooster cartoon character named Cornelius - this culminated in a nickname - Cornelius Polio-Shoes. Kids can be mean as hell, can't they?

 

I had a pair of those shoes in about 2nd or 3rd grade...worst things ever. I think they are the reason why my feet are so gnarly looking today.

 

How it looks today. It appears most of the buildings are still intact.

 

I remember the shoes, based on some silly engineer's product idea. BUT, these real-life comments from (folks!) REAL-LIFE CONSUMERS are killin' me!

 

Man I read this ten minutes ago and I'm still laughing....sounds exactly like what would have been said when I was a kid.

An observation here. Notice how the widening of the street resulted in a narrowing of the sidewalk. Progress probably came after foot traffic diminished.
No one walks anymore. People at the store look at me funny 'cuz I park so far away.

 

I don't think the street is very much wider, maybe a little - in the old days, the diagonal parking took up a lot of space.

 

I am thinking those shoes were called "dutchboys" .... I never had a pair but felt sorry for those that did!

 

I had a pair of those shoes, we called them "Snap Jacks". Yes, they did press down on the top of your foot!
