Good point. When an aspect of car culture is based on cruising instead of racing, a four-door car makes a lot of sense. Have you seen this awesome thread?
A friend of mine sold a '39 Chevy 4 Door to a fellow in California and the guy said he'd buy every '39 Chevy 4 Dr. my friend could find. A couple more '39 Chevy "Bombs".
That body style was originally used by cord in the front wheel drives and then they sold the dies. Graham and Huppmobile continued to make cars from them into the 40's. I guess Cord and Hupp were pretty much always sister cars though. We had a '35 Hupp in for restoration a few years back and it also had the "Cord" look to it.
You are correct. The Hupmobile Skylark and the Graham Hollywood were sister cars using the Cord body dies. My late father bought the Cord in my avatar for $50.00 in May of 1962. it is one of two Cords known with a Rollston installed sunroof by the factory. This one was originally owned by a Chicago bandleader by the name of Lou Breeze. I still have the car. Here's a picture of a Hupp Skylark as well as a couple of a 1935 Aerodynamic Hupps also often called the "Sad Eye" Hupp. Another 4 door I happen to like. I prefer the '34.
The saloon door style of front suicide and rear std. opening is a great setup for 4dr cars. They just look better that way to my eyes.
I agree but I don't think a car like the '33-'34 Ford would look right with standard rear doors. I have one of those too that Dad bought in 1968 for $325.00. I've always liked the '33-34 Ford 4 Door much better then the 2 Dr. Just seems to look better to me. The picture is not my car.
A lot of times the 4drs just have way more class than the 2drs. This is true for a ot of body styles IMO.
I'm probably biased, but I'm kinda partial to the '32 Fordor in my garage. '33 and '34's are awesome too.
In my opinion 4 doors are more elegant than two doors. They carry more of a luxury look. The 39 Chevy is a perfect example, as are the mid 60's Lincolns. It's all about the build, not the number of doors a car has. A clapped out looking 2 door isn't automatically cooler than a 4 door unless the 4 door is clapped out too. This 49 is what inspired me to start my build. I love this car. I like the proportions of the 4 door sedan a lot more than the 2 door body style. Same with my 66 Galaxie. The 2 door is too muscle-carish, but the 4 door makes for a much better cruising machine.
