I have been pulled over in my model a (restored) many times for only having one tail light. I have to explain that it was manufactured with one. I also get pulled over in my 48 ford for the tail lights not being bright enough. Then I proceed to explain that it is 6v and none of the lights are bright enough.

I work with the cops a lot also with the fire dept and when they see it is me they ask how long I've had the car. Its a good time. Lol

I have also studied the Colorado revised statues and have found ways out of a few tickets. I found a statute that says they have to have you in for your first court appearance within so many days and the cop wrote a date way over that. The statute states clearly that the ticket should be dismissed and the officer guilty of this should be terminated but the judge did not care about the statute. I received the ticket. I was in the wrong.

I am a younger guy myself (28) and I use to play hell with the cops writing me for anything and everything. That's why I educated myself.

Glad you could educate the officer.. hopefully he will not have your number.

maybe the hole got welded up when it was rechromed? whatever, i would get a lite on there somehow. licence plate frames have them built it. i wouldent look for ways for them to look twice at me. life's much easer when you stay out of their web.

Maybe this a silly question but, why dont you just fix, or install a license plate light?
The car used to have one.

  4. Sounds like the late night meeting of an asshole and a smart-ass:D

Seriously though this happened to me as well when I was about your age in my 64 Galaxy. That's why I had to open your thread and read the story. I got pulled over parked in front of my house though, didn't quite make it to the driveway. Cop asked me where I was heading, I told him home, he asked where that was, I pointed to the house directly above the eyes we was shining a light into, he and my roomates watching from the window all got a good laugh.

i hate to tell you this brother but you just made a enemy with a young cop.and if you 2 go to war i promise you he will win. judges seem to believe cops just a tad bit more than us.i also think he can go anywhere and write you a ticket anywhere if he lite you up on a public road.he can follow you into your garage if he wanted to.ive had it happen and thought i would win WRONG.had it explained to me by a pissed off judge. and he wasnt mad at the cop.back when i was a young gun i rode with a bike club. i had(still look the same today)long hair, earrings beard. when i would wear my cut(club colors) id get pulled over almost everytime.because i had already pissed off ONE cop in my town.and he had other cop freinds.so watch your ass cuz they sure are gonna be watching it!

Why don't you just put a light over your license plate (and fix your broken turn signals too?) so you don't get pulled over 4 more times? It's for your own good, anyway. The more light back there, the less the likelihood of getting rear ended, type deal. If you're driving around in a car that has these issues, expect to get pulled over often. And the whole "red" thing....well that's just another issue waiting to be exploited by a cop having a bad day. Good luck, son.

You need an "attitude adjustment" and I think I see one in the near future.

When, I was a cop, I would have smiled and said ok Mr <asshole> and researched 60 Galaxy specs, if they claim to have had a tag light, I would have issued an arrest warrant for false information to a Police Officer and probably stopped you and tore into your car front to back and ticketed you for EVERY violation on it. I was as nice as I could be to every one until you were an asshole...AND you sir, were an asshole and would have had a very nasty night after I found the truth about Galaxy having a tag light from the factory. No need to be a nasty asshole to a cop...

  11. This problem will rectify itself shortly.
All that cop has to do is google "1960 galaxy licence plate light" and find out for himself if it had one or not. Probably find this thread too. Won't that be funny..

I am always very respectful when dealing with the police and have friends that are in law enforcement, but a few weeks ago we had a wierd encounter with a couple of Sheriffs who came to our shop. It was about 11 pm and I was outside one half of our shop washing and vacuuming my daily driver while my Sons were in the other half of the shop working on my one Son's Capri. All of a sudden things got real bright and I looked down the driveway and there was a Sheriff's car lighting me up with his spotlight. I kept vacuuming the trunk on my car and he eventually moved off.

When I was done I walked into the side of the shop where my Sons were and told them that a cop had lit me up and that I was happy they were keeping an eye on the area. My Son Dan and I were walking back to our side of the shop and there are two Sheriffs standing in the garage door opening, with hands on their guns. I greeted them and thanked them for patrolling our area as it made us sleep better at night, and we made small talk. Then one of them says "Do you guys have any identification ?" I said "Sure", and Dan and I walked to our side of the shop to get our drivers licenses, and Don went into his car to get his. One cop followed Dan and I very closely and the other cop stayed with Don.

We showed him our licenses, and eventually the other cop and Don walked over and the one cop says "Do you need any more?" and the first cop says "No." They gave us our licenses back and we tried making more small talk but the one cop starts asking questions about Dans car, and they weren't like he was interested in cars, it was like he was interogating him. The other cop was doing the same thing to Don, asking him questions about his Corvette, lile how long he has owned it, etc, trying to determine if it was his or stolen. Don said he offered to show him the registration, but he declined.

Then the other cop says "You guys have a lot of stuff in here", looking around, and I said "Yeah, my Sons and I build hot rods and have been in this shop for about 7 years, this is our hobby shop." The one cop says "Oh, these are your Sons?", and I told him yep. We tried joking a little with the cops but they were like robots.

They were not friendly at all, even after confirming we were ok, and I had the oddest feeling that they half suspected we were running a chop shop or up to some kind of no good. I followed them out to their squad cars and said "We are here late at night, is there something we should be keeping our eyes open for tonight that you guys were looking for?" and the one cop says "We were here for you, we had a report that there was a suspicious car with it's trunk open and we were responding."

When they left we had the oddest feeling. We would have expected them to lighten up a little after checking us out, but they it was as if they were still suspicious of us, even at the end of all that. We have been at that shop for 7 years, sometimes working with the garage doors open until daybreak, and have never had this happen. Like I said, we are happy they are checking the place out, but their attitude was just strange.

    Don

  16. Cops here don't mess with rods unless you're driving like an asshole! ( not implying that you were) Hot rods to a few cops are like a red cape to a bull, and that's bull shit.

If you were beaten "countless" times by cops, I'm having a hard time believing there wasn't a reason.

  19. The only words of wisdom my Dad gave me that stuck "Well then you better do everything now while you still know everything".

I had lots of run ins with cops when I drove my Duster daily - it was loud, fast and different looking enough to attract attention.

I learned these things from that car:

    1. As said earlier, cops are like bulls, try not to be the red cape.

    2. Light bulbs are cheap, make sure they all work.

    3. When going past a cop at 6000 rpm in first gear, some cops won't even give you a second look, some will pull you over and preform a body cavity search right there on the side of the road. Which cop are you going to get?

    4. Going bald and getting grey hair are not always bad things - you can get away with loud pipes if you don't fit the rest of the profile.

    5. Cops are being used as revenue generators now - you will get your share of bullshit tickets (I got one last year the day after my birthday for my license plate sticker being out of date) so why give them any help? I know hot rods are not about blending in, but keeping it well within the law will help avoid unnecessary meetings with law officials. They are indeed public servants but they don't see it that way, and they have guns.

Didn't Holstein use the same excuse to pull over and ticket Milner? Personally I've heard police treated much, much worse.. best thing is to be as courteous as possible always, remember you're driving a work of art and the poor schmuck has to drive home in his smart car after a hard day's work..

I always wondered how people who don't know the laws can possibly ENFORCE them... oh wait, this isn't about the law, this is about barney being an enthusiastic revenuer.... who by the way, like many cops, can't be bothered with anything as un-important as KNOWING the laws he's tasked with enforcing. As for the respect part, i have the same issue you do. I tend to treat others as they treat me. respect is EARNED, and a shiny badge makes no difference to me when it comes to respect.

I got pulled over one night for not having a front tag on my daily. I had been at a friend's house and had a couple of beers. My daily is a 74 Implala and my tag mounts kinda below the bumper on the right side. When the cop told me I had no front tag I was thinking that maybe it fell off. I was very polite and said really? He went and looked again and came back and said sorry I didn't see it the first time, they are usually in the middle. Most modern car's front tags are in the middle of the bumper and he being younger, he may not have been alive in '74. After the usual have you been drinking question to which I said I had a couple of beers, he said sorry and be careful. Had I been an ass he could have field soberity and breath tested me, and made my night really bad. Even if the cop is wrong being a pain in his ass isn't going to help whatsoever.

Thats why I love Dallas, I could drive around with dead whores piled in the front seat smoking crack and shooting a pistol and the cops wouldnt give a shit... as long as your stickers are good.

Cop - "you dont have a license plate light"
Me - "oh the one over my GREEN licence plate with my 1960" tab?! yea i dont have to have one because its grandfathered in as a R.C.W. since this car was never MADE with one."

So you straight up LIED to the police officer and then gave him all kinds of attitude when YOU were in the wrong?!

Then you and your grandma laugh that police officers aren't educated.

    OKK then.

Don, after 7 yrs I would DEFINITELY visit the sheriff on that one. Ask if any investigations are on-going. I know a LOT of law officers in my tri-county area from Judges all the way down to street patrol. Sometimes I get stopped by a smartass but I remain polite even when I wanta cuss him out. Tag light stops are the BIGGEST bullshit stunts ever pulled by any police since the dawn of time. I enjoy cracking wise about the lives lost due to non functioning tag lights. It is all about money now instead of safety. peace

when i was a teenager, i had a bad@$$ motorcycle with no mufflers & used to outrun the county cops regularly - at least once a week - even in daylight - after about 6 months of this, i was sitting @ a community store in my car & a cop pulls up - he got out & walked over the my car saying "we know who you are & we know where you live - if you ever pull that stunt again, we will be at your front door" - that cured the problem for them - you can't be an ass & expect things to go well
