Short only. There is a long story with pics on a GMC 60/66 site about a guy with a large family who ordered a new long panel and converted it to a long suburban when new. Even did the tailgate swap I think.
I can get a photo of a long 63-65 suburban, Now I have to check it myself to see if its a windowed panel. I drive by it all the time and it sure looks coo-er-different
The Suburban had windows on the sides... short-body only. There were two panel delivery trucks--one with the short body, one with the long. The long panels were frequently used by rural school districts, converted to buses. They had side windows, but they weren't the factory Suburban style, they were done by the conversion company. -Brad
Go over to Stovebolt.com, and look thru their member pics archives. You'll see several 1-ton panels. (those are the long ones) -Brad
The long panel was a 1-ton. The short panel was the 1/2 and I think (but am not sure) 3/4-ton. I don't remember if they had a 3/4-ton truck or not. The C10 was 1/2-ton. The info would be easy to find on Stovebolt.com. The trucks in that brochure, by the way, are '62 models--first year for that hood, and the Chevy's had the ugly grill and headlight bucket. It looked like they used the 4-headlight surround, but just stuck a single headlight in it. -Brad
No 3/4 ton suburbans back then, they were all short wheelbase half tons thru 1966. Starting in 67 they were long wheelbase, and 3/4 ton was available. This is an excellent resource for info like this: http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage-archive/vehicle-information-kits.html
Hey Brad- I scored meself a '66 sub project last summer. Sofa king stoked. Picked up a '62 GMC hood for it, already filled the signals. How's your sub coming? Check this out. Specs on the entire truck lineup for each year. Confirms that the long panel was C30 only. http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage-archive/vehicle-information-kits.html click 'show' next to "Chevrolet Trucks (All models not listed below)" to see the old stuff. Derrrrr I posted ^that^ before I saw squirrel's post.
I like the GMC hoods! I went with the '60 hood for mine... it had a '62 Chevy hood on it, until the hood flew open on the highway. THAT was exciting. Other than that, the truck is just plugging along. Waiting to do a front end rebuild on it... a desperately needed front end rebuild! Good link from you and Squirrel... Looks like I could go through a lot of printer paper on that one!
I seem to remember hearing that there was a variation in the latches around that time. That you had to swap the lower part of the latch too. Anyone heard of this? Man, mine needs EVERYTHING rebuilt.. I can't remember is yours torsion?
Are you talking about the hood latches? I don't think there's a difference--I didn't swap the lower part of the latch, and it hasn't flown up in about 20,000 miles. Yeah, mine is torsion bar. I'm nearly done with the Prototype V2.0 for front sway bars for the T-bar trucks. The manufacturer is supposed to bend it next week, and I'll get it for a test fit. They're expensive to rebuild, but I really like the ride of the torsion bar front end. -Brad
Here are my buddies 61 and my 65(sorry) 1ton panels-133" wheelbase, his is a chevy, mine(the blue one) is a GMC.
