Yes, I remember those. My dad called it "reconstituted" oil. He bought his from Sears. My job (I was about 12) was to check the oil in his '40 Plymouth every afternoon when he got home and fill it up when it was low, which was everyday. Some days I put 4 quarts in that thing. It finally gave up the ghost and dad traded it in on a '58 Dodge station wagon. I about cried when that Plymouth was gone. I tried to get dad to put another engine in it but for some reason he refused to go along with that idea.

Part of 50 built by American Locomotive Co. (Schenectady) for the New York Central in September 1937 thru April 1938. Unlike many other "Streamliners" around the country, 10 of these came from the factory with shrouding already in place. The class remained in service thru about 1953. Date of these images is somewhere in that span.

Based on Babe Stapp's ( the 99 roadster pictured a few pages back) finish record at Indy he could have been the originator of the start and park sydrome common in todays Nascar setting.

A "WAG" on this one. Design is typical of power built in late '30s-engine was probably in service until c.1948. Very few (if any) steam passenger locomotives were built after WWII. By 1952-3 most passenger trains were being hauled by diesel electrics.

Built in the late 20's. Shrouded in 39, pulled the 49er Pullman special trains from 39 through 41 from Chicago to the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco.

Colors were Armor Yellow, leaf brown with scarlet trim. There was another similarly shrouded and colored based on a 4 8 2 Pacifics built by Baldwin. There were 10 of these, not sure on the 4 6 2 as show in the above picture.
