I was releived to see that the car never ended up butchered up for bracket racing. To see it in the rafters reminds me of the Antiques Road Show. "What you have here sir is a car of historical drag racing significance." George, who built your motors, or did you perform the work?

Check out the parallel leaves and straight axle on this one. Wild. Was this a gas-class racer? Or could it have snuck into modified production?

I would have said early Pro Stock until you brought out the straight axle. May be some kind of NASCAR or IHRA or AHRA class. Every photo that I have of that car has the "X" on the window and no class designation.

Here is the same car running against Dave Lyle in a similar car and another view of the car. My apolozies to the photographer as I do not have their name to give credit.

I think that Mustang was run in a short lived class called "Ultra Stock" , (similar to Pro Stock) , but I may be wrong. Help..........

Strong Ford Racer during early Pro S/S
days running AHRA this from Dragzine"Sam Auxier Jr. from Aspen Hill, Maryland, owned and drove this patriotic-colored 1969 Mustang for AHRA Ultra Stock competition from a body-in-white that he was given by the Ford Motor Company in 1969. The car was built by Auxier, who did the engines, along with chassis man Chuck Denino, who later built several of the Sox & Martin cars. Under the hood was a Tunnel Port 427 with an 8-barrel carburetor configuration backed by a Top Loader 4-speed transmission with Nash gears. The Ford-backed Mustang sported a one-piece fiberglass tilt front end and a straight axle out front. This combination powered Auxier to 10-second elapsed times – relatively stout for its day. The Super Stock/Ultra Stock class in the AHRA was actually run by NASCAR and featured many of the all-time greats, including Don Nicholson, Sox & Martin, and Bill Jenkins. During its only season under the ownership of Auxier, it grabbed the ’69 Cars Magazine Shootout title by downing some of the biggest names in the sport, and was once featured in Hot Rod, Car Craft, and Super Stock magazines."

I sent a message to Dave Lyall, requesting if he could add anything to this thread. He posts to several other Ford related forums on the HAMB.
I followed NHRA alright, but I find this pre-Pro Stock AHRA and NASCAR class racing quite interesting.

As one local drag strip's early '60s poster said of a "Southern Super Stock Meet", "run what ya' brung, take out the seats and sit on your tool box".

Experimental Super Stock. Sam Auxier's still around and he has a radio show.
He could answer all those questions. Lot's of pics and info on his website.

  12. What a great picture - Darrel Vitone in the Inch Pincher vs Frantic Fred's RPU. Talk about a contrast in styles and eras! Love it.

And what a huge head start that Bug must have been given. At least 2 seconds and some change. This was OMS in 1971. The next year Badberg debuted his 29 Roadster that was high tech for the time, and beautiful.

I think the AHRA didnt get the credit they deserved. Jim Tice was always experimenting with the creation of various heads up classes as a way to satisfy the racer and fan. The Ultra Stocks serve as but one example, but Tice also created an injected gas funny car class that was popular on both coasts. The AHRA also had a jr fuel title at stake. I think Cox and Daniel served as the point series champ for that category in 1969. And of course their GT classes have already been discussed.

IHRA ran a Pro/Stock named class like NHRA, but I don't know anything about weight or other differences, or when they started.
How many years did Ultra/Stock run? Did AHRA ever change it to Pro/Stock??

Other than run whatchama-callit match racing, this was some of the best racing ever of actual cars with real automobile bodies, including what ran on high bank ovals. Tom S.

even if this were not an old discussion, the black and white on-track shot is the real one.

I think Ultra Stock ran 67-69, then Pro Stock as we know it debuted at 1970 AHRA Winternationals. I am thinking, and thinking has found me wrong on plenty of occassions, that AHRA called pro stock "GT-1" for a year or two. Dyno Don won at AHRA Winternationals in 1970 if memory serves me correct.

Indeed, a very version of either the first Pure Heaven, which later crashed, or its replacement, sans chrome and pearl paint. In 1968, Fitzgerald went for weeks undefeated in the local circuit. He was a very good engine builder offering his services out of Anaheim. He built a blown BBC for funny car racer Lee Jones before Jones ventured East to hook up with Malcom Durham.
