I have a 29 model A briggs, Its mostly stock right now (hasnt run in some time)

Im upgrading the front brakes to disks and trying to decide on what to do for the rear. As many here say I love the style of the Banjo but I know its a weak axle. My question, Is it worth swapping out the 29 rear Banjo for a 39 rear banjo? As I understand it they are a bit stronger and have hydrolic brakes?

Does this make sense? I know I know just go with a new axle but The car will be running the stock motor and will likely just be "an around the town" car.

Why in the world are you putting disk brakes on a stock A??? 39-48 drum stuff fits easy and will work just fine. Actually well set up mechanical brakes work perfectly well on a stock A.

  3. HRW Hot Rod Works do a 28 spline 9" style axle conversion kit for the banjo rear which is what I fitted in my 32.

Yep, a friend of mine locks up his '32 mechanicals all the time by accident...... The other choice would be f-1 self adjusters for a little less headache.

As for rear, stay the stock A unless you want something you can beat, then go to a later banjo and biggest of all PAY ATTENTION TO THE TORQUE SPECS ON THE NUT THAT HOLDS THE DRUMS ON!!! that is the #1 thing that gave the early ford rears their bad rep, because if they arent tight enough you can pretty easily shear off the axle keys.

Thanks shaggy. A good buddy of mine is from sultan, small world. So is there no advantage to switching from a 29 banjo to a 39 banjo?

The later banjos are wider than the stock A, how much depends on the year. There are several threads on here showing later juice brakes being fitted to an A banjo. The A banjo should stay as well as drum brakes...jmo.

The late banjos are a stronger rearend, they have a bearing on the pinion that keeps them from grenading, not to mention they have stronger everything else
