They can be stored, shredded, or burned.

    Frame them and mount them.

I remember when you could use them. Someone even tool-and-die-made some stars...

The trick word in your question is "legally."

You cannot legally do anything with ***les...
But I have heard of some people selling them as antique paperwork. Don't know if its true or not, but I defenatly would NOT burn or shred them...

Depending on what the ***le is for, some people pay good money for them so they can "hang those historical do***ents on the wall." ;);) I'm sure most of them get used for that too. ;)

  10. I used to have a set of stamps from the factory in Milwaukee, closed 4s starts and straight 9s. I did learn one thing in the chapter of my life, Ladies like Outlaws. ;)

The only thing that can be done with a ***le legally is to do what Squirrel suggested or you can frame them and use them for display purposes. They are covered by federal law and not state law.

In NY anything prior to 1973 used a registration only, no ***le. I knew people that kept old ones from junked cars and would use them to register a car or truck when they had one without the paperwork. The vin numbers did not match the registration! I never heard of anyone getting busted for it.

I did know someone re-tagging cars with vin plates removed from junked insurance write offs from out of state, but he's away permanently on other charges.

Probably papering the ****per at the office is the only thing you can wisely do with them.

No he's not....Obviously you understand that a ***le is related ONLY to the vehicle it was ***igned too, and any use of that ***le, other than for that vehicle is fraudulent. So what is it that you are looking to do ??? Most of the other answers were covered immediately, such as frame and hang them, or destroy them. If you're looking for cover to use one on another vehicle, you won't get it from me.....it ain't legal.

Guys used to get away with it before computer systems allowed one state's dmv to check most of the other 49 states files for a vin number in a few seconds. Even now some of those deals are coming back and biting guys on the ****.

I've got two ***les for my ot 71 truck. The ***le I got after I turned in the ***le my aunt gave me when I picked the truck up that had my cousin's name on it because they filed for lost ***le and the original ***le that they found later and kept. Try to run the original ***le in my uncle's name and it will show up that that ***le was voided 20 years ago. The only thing that the ***le with my uncle's name on it is good for is to let me know when he bought it.

I don't have an issue with buying what is basically a hulk with a clear ***le to use the ***le as long as you cut up the hulk and at least some part of it gets used in the build. I've bought more than one piece of crusher bait because it had a clear ***le with it.

Now I am starting to listen!
So in your way of thinking a guy could have a bolt, screw, radio, bumper, or front seat, etc. to lets say a Willys or '32 or '34 Ford and sell the part WITH the ***le legally?

Heck you can sell the ***le alone legally... it's what the buyer does with it that matters.

... if you buy a Model A Ford frame with a ***le having the matching number on it, you could likely build a hot rod out of old Model A parts -- but keep the frame somewhere in the barn so you can at least show you started with a legit number.

But a screw or bolt? Naaaaw!

The best thing to do with any ***le trickery is not post it on a public board on the Internet and keep all the restamping, ***le swapping, car torching, DMV frauding activity between you and yourself.

    Not here!

The head cheese made it a policy not to use the HAMB as a place to sell or trade ***les, gave me a good reason and I respect that, just thought there was another place to go, another way of handling it is all.

For the record I am not the one that is talking about re-stamping numbers, changing vin tag's, etc. some of you guy's read between the lines to much! Never mentioned one thing about it, this post wasn't about any of that.

Actually, you may not have said it "out loud", but your prior post does seem to more than hint at your intentions....and I guess, as said before, you can sell a ***le with a bolt, seat, fender or frame, or even by itself....that's just fine....but, if the BUYER decides to use that ***le for another vehicle, HE'S committing a crime....is that what you want to hear ??? That you can legally sell a ***le to someone so that THEY can commit fraud ?? Sure, go ahead, I guess...???
