Tires were too good to be true...only one is new(nov 2008) on the upside my engine will be here in 2 hours,,,,
OK so I got a line on new rubber cheap,I got my engine, just waiting for the intake and carb for my ICS Vortex heads.. Now,Wiring:How simple is it to wire something like this with a rebel wire kit? I dont think Ill run AC No power windows no stereo just the basics? Is the rebel wire kit worth it?
Thats goin to be coolest truck, keep on posting The grinder discs tends to explode when the grinder is of angle sideways from the cutting line, please be careful and also use the protecting shield on the grinder. Ive seen once a guy with a trashed hand and it wasn't funny at all.
I am embarrASSed to say this but: I usually step on the discs and break them or the grinder falls off the table/truck with the disc installed and the disc bends and breaks,It makes me mad! Well I know not to risk a limb by using a defective or bent cutting dis,c But I was being a cheap bastard so I picked a damaged disc up,slapped it on the grinder and said to my self"be careful the disc might explode in your face" Amazingly there was no alcohol involved in this decision,I'm sure I would not have used it if Jack warned me before hand.
Not much progress. Im waiting for the Brown truck to deliver some goodies to bolt to the ICS Vortex So I can start wiring. Also I made this shirt many moons ago:
I really like the proportions on this truck. most of the coe's around here are transport/ rollback style I like the hot rod aspect of a truck better than another work truck. my shoebox is my first attempt at a car my roots have always been with trucks.
No,I am going with aftermarket vortec intake and a holley carb, wich eans that I have to go work for that guy.
Got my Holley from the brown truck yesterday. I'm waiting for my intake from Jegs.Ordered it at the same time. I have the engine on a table and the transmission ready to mate. I have never done this,Is there any clear instructions on how to sit the torque converter into the transmission>? I dont have the bolts for it,does anyone know what the sizes are? Thanks
Real purty on top, you need to clean up the rest.... With the TQ converter, make sure it is fully engaged. Push in on it while turning slowly. Also might want to replace the tranny front seal first if you haven't.
Torque converter install: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFFIPyv2C_4 The trick is count the number of splined shafts, and make sure the torque converter drops that many times (plus 1 more for the pump). You shouldn't be able to get your fingers between the converter and the bellhousing when it is all the way in.
At First it was like :"what the hell is they talking about but once the converter went in,I knew what you meant. It was an eventful day today. I was still asleep when I started cleaning the ICS Vortex. It wasn't as greasy as others but it was still a PITA;Johnny rebel was banging on the radio, weather was good, what else could I ask for? Maybe some Jack.... Wait who is that???AHHH my idiot neighbor and his friend, they only come to say hi and to tell me how to build my stuff.oh shit. Oh well I survived their blabbering for 4 hours... I got the engine clean and painted,I cleaned the Transmission and got rid of most of the grease. I got new intake manifold gasket set,I cleaned the surface where the gasket goes, took a little sanding paper to it,cleaned it again, opened the box.....Let's see,1 gaskets for each side of the valley,1for the distributor,1 for something else... Box said to use the little tube of silicon/gasket maker for the front and back of the valley,,,, Wait,Neighbor's idiot friend is saying something: "Dont use gasket maker for those little places, you shoudda bought the entire kit,if you do it it will leak" I ask the HAMB: Is this guy right or is does he have shit for brains? He put a doubt on my mind so I didnt install the Intake Manifold. Oh well. Tranny Issues. First time I cleaned this tranny,I used degreaser,I covered the 2 holes and washed the sumbitch,But water managed to get inside,Will it be ok? Or do I need to rebuild? I drained the water as soon as I finished. Today I cleaned it again but I did a better job at it. After I got it clean,I took the oil pan off and took a Peek, found some white sediment,Am I screwed? Anywho, I sat the torque converter inside the tranny and then I bolted the transmission to the engine, I didn't have the right size bolts for the converter,I had some that are longer,Can I cut them down so they fit? Well I hope you can answer my questions, Thanks guys.
I've never used the end gaskets on Chevy intakes, I just lay down a thick bead of RTV and bolt up the intake; never had a problem. I would get the correct bolts for the torque converter. In my mind that's one of those areas where there is a specific fastener for a good reason.
your on the right track dont listen to shit for brains, rtv the valley and go, the rubber end gaskets slide out and you get oil everywhere. I would replace the filter in the tranny pan and clean it and use it, I have steam cleaned trannys and filled the pan with water and had no issues with them not working. Had a long talk with Jack last night and he confired this also.
Thanks Guys, Anyone have the correct size for these TC bolts? Its the only thing keeping me from finishing bolting the tranny.. So does anyone have a list of what exactly what I need to make this trannu work? 1-cable operated shift selector or manual 2-transmission fluid level dipstick and tube. What else?I dont have anything for this transmission so Im trying to make a list
Thanks man. Love your car love those fins,,you migh have seen my first car in my first pictures,1959 dodge coronet. My build came to a stand still for a minute,I need so many parts and I dont know when ill drive to vegas to get em. My TH400 IS from a 1985 truck,ICS Vortex is a 1999 block so the torque converter didnt bolt up to the flywheel. I elongated the holes but my buddy said that it would shake and rattle to death,so he will give me an older flywheel, older starter, older alternator and some brakets.. we shall see. WE WILL BE DRIVING THIS THIS YEAR!
Ok So I got ICS vortex to start,(thanks to you),,Im goint to wrap it up this month and stuff it in,Gonna get some tires do brakes and take it for a test drive,,,, So close yet so far,,, Heres the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCzqOv13p00&feature=youtu.be I been taking too long because Jack has not been helping me,I hope we can hang out soon. And if your wondering who ICS vortex is,well thats him in the pic:
Another little update. I managed to drop Vortex between the rails. Man! Its a beetch! I had to take 1 exhaust manifold off and the 2 motor mounts, I need to make the cab tilt forward other wise maintenance will be a PITA. I think Im going to fab new motor mounts to get the engine lower its a bit too high and that way I dont have to fab a lip/spacer for the doghouse. Its a bit scary to think that the engine is so close to you and I wonder how hot it will get in there. Anyway,I got a bunch of work ahead of me. One suggestion,DO NOT build a car on gravel.!
Looking good Seth. The engine sets up higher than I was expecting..... On mine I think I may move the engine back about a foot, and as low as I can get it. Keep the pics coming, your build is a great help to me!
Oil pan can be as low as you dare, but a 16-oz beer can should fit under it at a minimum. And if you can, work up a skid plate, maybe off an old Bronco or something.
Thanks I might try to move the engine back a foot also so I can get the engine lower but Im not sure at this point. I might run it like this and modify the dog house..
I was sworn to secrecy. It wasn't easy. However,I can tell you that it did involve an electric cattle prod.
