History 64/65 Comets old drag cars lets see pictures

  1. Scored an Econoline axle complete, working on removing 5 1/2 inches out of the middle. gonna tweak the rear fenderwells a bit, maybe a bigger rear axle, and I have a killer set of ladder bars built for a project such as this I've been hoarding!! Might jump up to a 390 when I can eliminate the inner fenders, with white fenderwell headers. Gotta have the piecrusts too. Towel City retreading in Kannapolis is making them. They're just up the road !!

It'll be a bitchin ride! Did you score the springs and perches as well? With the added heft of the 390, you may need to add a leaf or two to the spring pack.

Last weekend, I got a back-to back ride . My Comet against a big block Nova, with the Nickey Bill Thomas axle set-up, which I believe sources some of their parts from Speedway. Had it not been for the added heft of the all-iron Rat motor, those short springs would make a long trip a bit bouncy. Remember, the longer the leaf spring, the better the ride...:)

I got a question for us ford/mercury guys. When converting to alternator from generator on a sbf is it always necessary to drill and tap the bolt hole on the head.My reason for asking is currently I have a gm alternator for mock up with the spacer and washers stacked.
I have notice that the Ford alt has the housing with the additional space. This would eliminate the washers but I am not sure about the bolt hole size for the ford alternator?

    Thanks,
    Mark

Mark;most GM alternators use a 3/8" top bolt,Fords use a 7/16" top bolt. You can easily drill out the hole, then make a longer spacer.Just did one last month for a friends 64 Fairlane. ROY.

Here's what dropping the oil pan produced:

The cap still looks fine, but the crank will be a ballast weight from here on out.
Also- a big THANKS to fellow racer and friend, Roy, for sourcing me a replacement crank suitable for my '64.
The rest of the engine appears to be fine, but will still get a complete R&R due to the small bits of debris possibly floating around...

  16. Check and make sure the torque converter snout isn't bent and it is in balance if the car is an automatic. A friend did the same thing and that was the problem . Also make sure the converter is completely on the sprag or it can load the crank and " grind " out the thrust bearing.

    Roy,
Thanks for the information.I am going take a look at it this weekend and see if I can get it done.Did you do this why the engine was installed or was it on a stand? By the way is your friend running the GM alt or the Ford.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Mark;we did it at the Drags between qualifying rounds!!!Used a cordless drill with a 7/16" bit,he already had it setup for a GM one wire using Ford brackets. We bought a rebuilt alternator from a vendor, all he had were ones with the 3/8" hole! ROY.

Thanks!! I didn't realize it was between rounds:D That is the set up I have now but with a ford spacer and a bunch of washers to make up the difference.I got a cousin I need to get in contact with who is a machinist, that way I'm hoping he can make me my own spacer.I'm going give it a shot this weekend!

Original 390, a 351 Cleveland in it now, get it fired back up, and re-sell it to a Ford purist.

That sounds great Dave, I will plan on being there that week end. Sounds like a good time and will get to see a bunch of Ford product. We can get some new Comet photos for the thread to see. Al
