I needed a shifter.....So I Built one!

I see a tech article in the making...

 

I can excuse your tardiness......if you can cover my airfares and shipping costs! I am free next Wednesday and would happily call round to your place and show you exactly how its done! I am sure you could use an off the shelf shifter and add a genuine lever with a few minor modification.

Here is a bit of an update for this one lads! I was going to send these parts off for Cadmium plating, but, the company that was doing the plating went ***s-up! So I decided to flag that idea and hit it with black etch primer and put it back together, as time is rapidly becoming my enemy!

The Knob in this picture is not the one I will be using on the car, but this one should be handy to stop people getting impaled! or losing an eye!

I thought it only fair to post an update on this thread too! the shifter and trans tunnel have been to the upholsterer, and now they are back and looking real pretty!



We decided on some real nice soft leather, and have used it on the e brake cover and will be using it on the seat cushions too. The colors are all coming together and looking real sharp.....but you will have to hang around to see the whole package......real soon!

I ran the engine up on Sunday and we noticed then that I had no reverse gear. I had previously adjusted the linkage to suit the park position which has the handle up against the dash. I could not get reverse gear without losing park, which is at the opposite end of the spectrum. An unusual shift pattern of P, N, D, L, R. So I pulled the shifter and lengthened the slot in the end of the gate for reverse. Re***embled it all and spun it all up again and now have both park and reverse working.

 

Back a couple of years ago I thought I would post a photo of the shifter I built but after reading your thread and seeing what you did my effort was destined for the s**** pile. HRP

The way the "gate" is sandwiched in between the side angles is a really nice idea and I can see that it took some thought.
I like the idea of using tabs to locate it. Makes changing the pattern very easy if needed; or even a different pattern for other transmissions....gotta plan ahead, eh?

I have to admit that I stole most of the ideas from a production one, but I needed to personalize it for my trans and unusual shift pattern. i won't be changing trans in the car this one is in......nothing else is small enough to fit!
