Does this make me a bad person?

Or is the customer paying for the time it takes to find something in the clutter in a messy shop as well as the actual work being done on the vehicle???

Just being the devils advocate here but I know I am much more efficient in getting a job done when everything is neat and organized. There has to be something said for needing something and being able to walk right to where it is to get it...be it a tool, a part, spray bottle, etc.

Unfortunately, I find it impossible to stay neat and organized so it is a moot point...

Finally...there is a difference between clean / dirty and organized / messy / cluttered. I don't know how anybody keeps one of those spotless shops if there is any grinding, welding or basic working going on! You can have a very organized shop that is still filthy dirty...

 

Wow, looks like my shop. My tools ,and stuff I work with,are organized. Once a week I use my leaf blower to clean shop. In the tear down mode to paint my frame now ,so parts and pieces are all over.

 

Im OCD, sweep the garage everyday kind. But it doesnt make you a slob, just busy

My father in law did the same thing........................... once.
He is now banned from the shop, could not find shit after that.

looking at the bright side, when I buy a broom it lasts almost for ever!!!
I get into a shop wher the floors shine and they polish every end wrench before they put it away I have to wonder how they figure their hours.
the flip side I spend half my time looking for stuff. and the half trying to remember what I looking for

 

When I can't find something I clean the shop until I find it. There are places in my shop that are really clean and places that need excavating.

 

Is that kinda like a Model "A" 5 window?!?! I swear I owned my '48 for the better part of 15 years before I ever heard the nomenclature P-15 applied to it... Now it thinks it's special!!

Garry, if you consider your self a bad person for that little bit of a mess, then I'm the devil himself! I spend too much time working and thinking about the work I'm doing to worry too much about being tidy...

It has five windows doesn't it?????I don't think ford owns that term exclusively.......p-15s have 2 models with 5 windows, club coupe and a bizzy coupe.

 

from videos and stuff I've seen Bill Hinze and Gene Winfield;s shops are not clean. I know of a body shop that was clean enough to eat off the floor, in 99 he had a 79 dually wrecker parked inside like new but I don't think there was one customer car inside. If busy you'll be dirty. alot a clean day every now and then.

 

I thought I had heard P-15 before but I wasn't sure. I guess I'd rather be ignorant than stupid.

My shop is completely organized and everything put in it's place...about every 2-3 weeks.

To be honest, it's been like 10yrs of having more that 1 person around, which means more than one makes at least some effort to remain cleaned up. I don't lose parts or equipment, I don't really wollow in dirt and grease, but it has looked like Katrina stopped by the day before a few times already.

But I have to wonder about the timing of this thread. Guess what week it is for me? Yup, took a break from what I call "starting over" day. At least I constatly "see" stuff and remember where it is now.

This sounds just like me! Now if you were a real slob, your driveway would look worse than your shop LOL.

 

I too sweep my shop with a leaf blower. I open the door at both ends then start in a far corner and work my way to the other door, it really works well. I found a missing 1/2" socket last week.

Before I retired I worked on business machines for almost 40 years. I had one account that I serviced for many years and when I threw old parts in the trash can the guys would dig them out and save them. I asked why and they had a great story about a person in one of their receiving departments that was absolutly anal about matching paperwork with shipments. They would box up the old parts and ship them to receiving without any documentation and they knew that the person there would go nuts trying to match them and finally store them in a bin until he worked it out. They all had a good laugh thinking about stored boxes of used parts filling up warehouses. Kind of like my shop and yours....

I thought I had thunk this one up. I'll bet I have at least 50 of the clear plastic bins in my shop. Best thing I ever did for organization - I can actually find what I'm looking for quickly. Not a bad deal at about a buck each at Walmart.

 

Damn, I thought I was bad. On a good note, I bet you know where everything is. And your cars are beautiful.

 

I helped Lucky clean up a little when he was working on my coupe and he couldn't find any of his tools if they weren't on the ground or just loaded up here and there.lol Oh well. He was suprised when they were in the tool box in the correct drawer. I'd say do what works for you.

 

Ha! I just came out of my garage after cleaning it for a bit. All my tools were piled on top of parts, piled on top of boxes, piled on top of the workbench. I still get stuff done. Part of the reason why my garage is a mess is because I have more stuff than I have space for so I'm forced to make it all work together.

Nothing wrong with being messy as long as you get work done.

 

put all my tools away now i dont ahve enough space on my tool boxes, guess i bought a few tools lately

I have a friend of mine who is a borderline hoarder, but definitely a slob. You can't ride in his truck unless you throw garbage out first. The house is a pigsty. I visit once in a while as a reason to clean my shop and house. I have told him he was born as a hunter gatherer, but he remained in the village with the women. Myself, I am a warrior, kill it and move on. My boss likes the fact that I live by the motto, "If you have time to lean, you have time to clean." In actuality, I have to stay moving, and doing something or my body starts to hurt so bad I can't move.

 

i have been "organizing" my garage for 2 years...and i still cant find stuff. maybe one day i will actually do it.
