That's how they are. Most people using them make them the same length. That's what I did to mine.

The ones on my 40 Ford are both the same length. I think you could use yours, but one shock will be "open" more than the other buy about what looks like an inch. I don't think it will really harm anything as the weight of your car is on the spring.

WOW, how are those laid down shocks mounted on the end we can't see?

Those unequal length brackets are , I believe, for 42-48 application. The shorter side is likely to clear the Panhard rod which all 42-48 cars since the springs are not mounted in tension.

Houdaille made the front and rear tube shock for Ford, Lincoln, Mercury production and engineered aftermarket replacement kits for the earlier Fords from 35-41. I've never seen a 32 or 33-34 kit so can't say they were ever made.
Kits were sold in front or rear sets consisting of all necessary hardware, bracketry, and nicely done instructions. It is hard to find in-the-box Houdaille kits, but terribly unusual to find their parts on cars and pre-42 pickups.

That's the way the aftermarket tubular shock kit was installed when I bought the car in 1963. Yes, I agree, the angle is way to steep (low angle) for effective shock operation. I have to remount the top mounts so shocks are more vertical and still "clear" everything..

They are Mid 47 48 mounts. I have a early 47 coupe that ran lever shocks. my parts car was a 47 4 door with the uneven shock mounts.

When did they change? My '48 has lever shocks. S/N decodes as very early '48 production. Some parts like the voltage regulator were date coded from the fall of '47.

Contact the guys at pure hot rods. They cast a set that are equal length and I believe they have an ad in the HAMB classifieds.

    Hope that helps.

I sold those shock mounts at the Amherst , NH swap meet last weekend. I took them off of the rear end taken out of my 48 Ford coupe so I can tell you for sure they are not from two different cars . If you want your money back PM me and I'll take care of it. I know they were mine because of the rope I had holding them together. John

Not offended at all. I never noticed the difference until I saw the picture here. By the way , I have an open driveshaft banjo rear end and drive shaft out of a 47 Ford PU if you have any interest.
