This has been a very interesting thread. Thanks to all who've contributed -- I've read your comments, looked at your photo's, and enjoyed them all. From a guy who turned 16 in 1961 ... and actually experienced the 60's first-hand -- here's a couple of thoughts on the subject:

First of all, as has been well-said already, the "style" of the early 60's varied widely by geographic region, and I don't know that we should be looking for a single "best answer" to the question of what's period-correct for the `60's. So Cal was certainly the dominant influence of the day, but the Northwest had it's own flavor, as did the Midwest, the East Coast, and so on. Even North Texas -- where I grew up -- had a style that was at least subtly it's own.

Secondly, hot rodding (and customization) as always been about taking a vehicle that was likely produced in the millions, and changing/improving it in ways that are a reflection of the owner -- his budget, his talent, and his aesthetic sense. Since all three of those ingredients vary widely a**** the hobby's adherents, the results vary widely as well. But the notion that one car is somehow "correct" and another product of the same influences is somehow something less ... is pretty much ******** IMHO.

That said, here's a couple of pix of my `30 coupe. It wasn't built to be "period correct" -- rather it was intended to reflect the influences I experienced in Saint Jo TX in 1962. Disc brakes, r & p steering, and a couple of other things are a concession to the facts that (1) I'm now old enough to no longer enjoy being uncomfortable, and (2) my grandkids are regular p***engers and their safety is a big issue for me. I think it does justice to what was going on -- where I lived -- in the early part of the `60's.

Ironically, that's the first thing I said to Garry when I saw the coupe at L.S.R.U. a couple of weeks ago! I have always loved the '30 grill...

Ya know, the '34 coupe above made me think of another early sixties styling cue that I have noticed over the years studying this time period. See how the frame is painted black? Look through any ealy sixties mag and look at the open wheel cars. I'd say 95 percent of them have frame rails painted black. Bodys were always what ever color the owner wanted, but frames black. Just an observation.

That's great. I'm pretty finicky, and it seems even the coolest cars have "something" that the owner just goofed up on. But, I love everything about that car. The stance/wheels/COLOR/interior/motor..........
That's really a great hot rod

They spread the image across two pages.....so the fold or "gutter" went right down the middle. Happens all the time when they want a larger image but really breaks up the car, nothing disparaging to the magazine, I like it.

  28. I hate that too. I've been looking for years for an original picture of Gary Heiliker's T from Andy Southard's book, it was "guttered" in the book as you say.

  29. Love yer car whats it turn? My old buddy built my Stude in the 60s I have owned it 15+ years...
