I just cant get over Gils 40,the curves of this car just make it so damn sexy.I do go to El Mirage sometimes and Bonneville almost every year and I just cant fathom seeing this car run 129mph under flathead power. The sight.....the sound...... forgetabout it.

  2. Someone needs to clone this car!!!

  3. Well if I had the chedder, I would do it in a fuckin second!! It would have the same Evans powered flathead because that is a MAJOR part of this car.It is my dream to clone this car but with this shitty economy's direct effect on my trade...it wont be happening soon.It would have to be a 100% clone,I dont think a loosely based car would do any justice.

  4. Yeah I agree and that is the tough part as the engine would be a BIG chunk of change these days.

  5. Well as Jimmy White says......"If you wanna dance then you gotta to pay the band." No Evans powered flathead .....No Gil Ayala Mercury clone.

Those are both beautiful Mercs Jeff!

I love the flow of that first one, though I personally think it could benefit from some running boards. I know its a common early thing to do, but I feel like it interrupts the flow.. if you know what i mean.

What's that hook type thing on the bottom of the front fender for?

I love the 39-40 Merc with out the running boards... It makes them look so cool. A lot of early Customs did this to make them look more classic/expensive.
A lot of the early Coachbuilt and European built one off cars had no running boards. And that was the look the early customizers where after.

And yes this is the only photo I have of that early Barris Custom.

Ok my try. To do the correct 40´s style custom. And it have to be a 40´Merc. I did start whit this coupe and a burned crashed convertible.
Lots of work but it is worth it.

Yes!! the look I'm going for as far as the chop is concerned and some of the style (i.g. flipper caps and 37 Desoto bumpers) I will have running boards and Appleton 112s. It looks as if the front windshield is pushed up compared to the Zaro and Andril Mercury. I love both those Mercs!

Note: I loved the placement of the antenna, Zaro and Andril had it too and I have one for mine too.

Bullet Nose.............I can't pull up the Photos of Harry's Merc !!!!!! I think it Might be the car I (we) Built in early eighties (?????) IT HAD DeSoto Bumpers With Guards, One easily recognizable feature on the car was Dash Trim, Instead of original Plastic (Groved ) pieces, IT had Cherry Wood Pieces......Fully Dressed Flattie, chopped 4 in front, about 5 1/2 in Rear w/ Lincoln Back Glass.
A close friend of Mine, Who had the Car after I Moved from Bristol Va./ Tenn., Kept up with the Car after It changed Hands about five Times !!!! Last, (I was told ), IT was in Arizona.........my friend, now deceased, was only contact I had...........Car had five page feature in "Rod Action" magazine........titled, "Mystery Merc "........any info, PM me or
    E-mail. Thanks (Chuck Norris's Brother !!!) Smokey2

Looks really great. I have always loved the shape of the 39-40 Mercury four doors. The only thing I personally would not do on a 1940's car is wire wheels. They are very nice, but look out of place on such a bulbous car. They much better go with later 1950's customs than the 1940's or early 1950's style you are going after.
