Customs Traditional Custom work in progress

    I know there are some threads about traditional customs on the here, but I like to see what's getting build. Is there a future trend for real period correct customs?? It seems like there are tons of good hotrods out here, but on a custom people say 'I keep my hood close' or so. If you can't see it, it doesn't mean it isn't there...
    I like to narrow the cars to the early years, 1935 to 1954, not that I don't like other years and models, or think they are less traditional. Just to make it simpler, not starting an argument.
    If you don't know what I mean with traditional, here is my def. and I don't wanna start an endless tread about what is and what isn't.

    No front clips
    No Frame swaps, unless from the time period
    No BAGS or hydraulics
    No Mustang 2 stuff
    No modern drive trains
    No fuel injection
    No power steering
    No AC unless orig.
    No big visible stereo systems
    No LED lights
    No tilted Steering

    The world isn't perfect.. So I exclude some things like disk brakes, upgraded original suspension and steering, rearends like 9inch or so, 350's chevys might be hard to avoid, but the ideal would be a old engine.
    Thats my general idea of this thread. People who like other stuff should not feel offended, there other threads. I just like to see some cool pics and stories about their build and get a positiv inspiration for other and to keep the trend alive.

    Low budget or high end, mild or wild.

    I start with my 41 Plymouth never ending project...

    I bought it 2002 as a original no runner socal dessert car in a trailer park in Hemet.

    I love the Plymouth ! I hope this thread gets some traction as we NEED some more Trad Custom threads here on the HAMB.

    Hey Grease,

    To your build list I'd add Traditional Metal & Paint,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    No squirt gun welds
    No plastic filler used
    No overcleared, overcut urethane paint jobs in colours that didn't exist in the build era
    No goofy ''mail slot'' chops that no one could have driven on the street in the build era

    I won't give ya the SBC default mode, as that motor didn't see production until 1955!

    On the subject of traditional paint finishes- today we see many kustoms finished in urethane that's been overcleared, cut and polished, if you've ever seen a real nitrocellulose lacquer paint job parked beside an overcleared urethane you know they look nothing alike, it's like the difference between vinyl and leather:eek:

    Check out the 1948-52 New Old Style Kustoms thread.

    It is full of some really traditional customs.

    I love traditional customs.

    Hey pimpin Paint, I agree with the paint, but it can be really hard with modern paints. We were painting a friends car and he wanted the original poly single stage metallic on his 49 Olds. We used the finest metallic and still gave the car that modern look. The color and the paint appeal was ok. We ended up using single stage solid color.

    Any more cool builds out there?

    On another thread about 41 to 48 Fords we posted pics of my friend Magoozi's 46, when he took out the Mustang 2 frontend and put it back to I beam.

  10. My 46 ford business coupe will fit in perfectly. All original driveline, suspension etc. It has a newer flathead (49) and 53 F100 front brakes, but everything else is 1946. I should mention its getting some items molded and shaved and lowered to a speedboat stance with skirts. Late 40's early 50's build style. I really have to learn how to post pics.

    Hey Grease,

    On the subject of early poly type single stage mixes, next time try the automotive restoration sites, the antique & classic ones, not muscle cars! Good formulas for early mixes are out there, but you gota hunt 'um. Most automotive paint stores only know what's in their computer, and won't be much help.
    IMO, a ''traditional kustom'' with a colour from the 60's-2000's looks like a hooker in a prom dress.

    I'll throw my hat in the ring... 1951 Mercury coupe with a Flathead & Merc-o-matic. The body is almost back on the frame. It won't be chopped for a year or two. Still running drums, but an upgraded master cylinder. Frame is boxed, a lot of holes welded up to smooth it out. Dropped uprights and Aerostar springs up front, 4" drop springs plus lowering blocks in the rear. Headlights will be frenched along with different taillights, trim holes along the side and fuel filler are gone. Might try to lose the door handles this year but my big push is getting this thing moving under it's own power. The last time it was driven was over twenty years ago. Just painted the firewall semi gloss black, underneath is all metallic silver. Click my signature for a whole bunch of pictures.

    I'm glad to see a 49 to 51 Merc. build that way! It's gonna be one of the few. Money wisely invested. Those cars got butchert bad in the 80's and 90's. Or now???

    I helped out a friend once, taking his 50 Merc to Scottsdale AZ. to sell at the Barrett Jackson Auction. It was super nice from the outside, but from the inside it felt like sitting in a '89 Camaro! OMG! It sold for over 40K.

  17. Well, I have to consider the progress my '51 Plymouth "project" pretty traditional. The chop is a mild 3 1/2" that was metal finished. The engine is flat 6 with my own intake. The suspension is cut coils up front and blocks out back. The stock mopar brakes are hard to beat and are all fresh...37,000 miles fresh...all the miles by me. Exhaust is Smithy's with by-pass pipes. Hubcaps are stock '51 Plymouth with bullets. Tires are Firestone 670's. Headlight rings are '55 Olds. Front grill surround will be '49 Willy's Aero with a Kaiser floating grill bar. Taillights are '56 DeSoto front turnsignal buckets.

    Got some more plans and hope to get started back on them. Quarter panel changes and tailights. Bumper and hood changes. Then paint.

    I always like the Mopar flathead sixes, they sound cool with straight pipes and make reliable cruiser. I had a 50 Dodge business coupe, drove it from San Diego to Vegas and got over 20 mpg. 50's Mopars are cheap and look really cool chopped.

    I had a '54 Plymouth overdrive in mine and drove from Charlotte NC to Vegas and got 26-28 MPGs. I loved the trans until I ran it low on oil. Now I only have a 1:1 trans. Kinda sucks.

    And while were at it we should eliminate any radial tires, tubeless tires, tempered glass, seat belts, rotary door latches, turn signals, halogen lights, tube shocks. After all we don't need all the safety junk. Also nothing but Ford, Chevy and Dodges right?
     
  21. My concept, & where I'm at (early days).. Super mild, what we call down- under 'improved stock'.
    Original six with double valve springs, headers, lightened flywheel & hot cam, alloy timing gear (wow!)
    Three on the tree
    Ultra low buck..big money will go on tyres, paint, brakes & wiring. Newest part will be '64 headlight rims.

    The push for period correct is getting better around here... so tired of airbagged garbage. I will slip my 51 in here when its ready and just censor the 1970 ford 8" rearend thats in it :D

    So far we got some cool stuff here. I appreciate cars that are different in a good way.Cars with soul, with a look right out the Little Pages Mags from back in the day. When a kid with no money turned his family sedan into a weekend cruising pussy magnet.

    I see you chime in a lot with your "wisdom" and I would enjoy seeing some of your projects that put all of that wisdom to good use...not trying to fling shit, just sayin...

    Built with "squirt gun welds," a 350, a little bit of bondo, and new paint materials...so it's not a "real" kustom...don't look too closely...

    I guess Dick Dean should have just quit when he switched to mig and "plastic body filler"...shame on him!

    BTW, that is a bitchin' Plymouth in the opening post.

    Again, this thread is not about nazi 1000% authentic cars. It's about the general idea and the main components that been used. If you bag your car, you like the world to see that your car can lay frame. So the car would not have traditional stance. A 8inch, 9inch or what so ever is always ok in my book. They are based on old technology, if you use them with leaf springs or what ever was used on your car. If you feel safer with seatbelds,..what so ever, who cares! Ohh and the new Firestone bias ply tires are not made out of the same rubber than in the 50's. Yes, Yes Yes. I hope we don't have to deal with any haters.


    I guess most people get the point,

    a few never will, nothing new.

    I'm looking forward for some more sweet rides and projects.

    my friend said, what a waist to put that beautiful Hemi into a Plymouth.. nice ha? I love that Plymouth.
