    water pump
    distributer
    timing chain
    lifters
    push-rods
    crank
    headers
    oil pump
transmission (not part of engine but connected)
    clutch
    hoses
    belts
    starter
    alternator
    crank shaft
    cams
    connecting rods
    pistons
    freeze plugs
    intake manifolds

    that should answer your question

hot rods were not built by rich people traditionally usually it was a blue collar person, who did what they had to do to make there car faster and sweeter.

An sbc is not the best engine for any hot rod, but it is the best engine for lots of builders.

  3. well i am like roger unless i am going to californicate i dont alloow extra time but on a 2,000 mile trip i allow a couple extra days but for most other shows i may leave at 5 am to get to them and dont have any breakdown time and many times a room is not in the budget, i do cary ign and fuel pump for SBC
last year i spent most of a show hot wiring the car to get home and have lost my lights and many other things, my console carries tools wire switches terminals and anything else that may break on road and i usually go through my vehicles and check bearings and most other stuff it is much better repairing in the shop
some of the long distance trips become a adve3nture and wally mart is the point of buying parts to keep going
had my duramax break in Ok coming back from GNRS that was kind of hard finding parts for in middle of nowhere but good samaritan hauled me to mr goodwrench for parts

If Chevy is your choice then use it, but don't choose it simply because it's cheap, reliable and you can get parts in Timbucktoo when you'd really rather have a nailhead Buick or a Cadillac or a hemi....

So what if you get stuck by the side of the road. You'll get home eventually. Life's an adventure, and it's short ... when you come to die, don't say "I wish I had put in a nailhead..."

There's many reasons why Hot Rod Magazine just last month (again) rated the SBC as THE BEST V8 of all time. Availability is just one of those reasons.

Back when the NSRA held the NATIONALS in Columbus Ohio, I was on the way there about 3 o'clock in the morning. The V8 SBC killed the fuel pump. :( At that time, no one had cell phones and the internet was not yet going.

I sat on the side of I 77 near Bluefield, West Viringia for maybe 15 minutes and the Highway Patrol stopped by. He radioed a guy who helped motorists that were broke down ( for a fee ).

He came out to where I was. I told him I had a bad fuel pump. He said he had one ... and would be back in 10 minutes. He came back with a used pump and a new gasket. For 20 dollars.

I bolted it on and was back on the road headed to Columbus. I was broke down less than 1 hour. In the middle of nowhere at 3 o'clock in the morning.

A great reason to run the SBC

to a bulletproof undestructabel reliabel engine??
I thought you didnt have to repair bulletproof
    reliable undestructable engines

Also a good reason to drive a new Honda or Toyota.

  14. "4t7flat" is just sore 'cause history shows that the small block Chevy replaced the flathead in the performance world.

    Hey... Deal with it!

  16. It is kind of ironic that the engine that is easiest to get parts for just about anywhere is also the engine that needs to be worked on the least because it is the best engine ever made. The original 350 in my 97 gmc sierra went 432,000 miles before I changed it. Still didn't burn any oil. I only changed it because I ran out of stones & was always thinking about how many miles were on it while I was thousands of miles from home.

  17. Oh I wouldn't go that far. I can point out many Chevy/GM ****-ups but there is a limit on how much you can place on the H.A.M.B.

My lawn mower has a flat head engine, and I can get parts for it real easy. A sbc would have too much power for my lawn mower. Lawm mowers are real boring! Besides I don't drive it too far, so if I need parts I can walk and get them.
I hope this makes sence to you.

  23. Nice thing about using Mopar motors, unlike the chevy they don't break down!! Plus it is no harder getting a part for one than a chevy. Plus don't forget how ahead and innovative mopar has been throughout the years over chevy.
And for the guys that say it is easier to work on a chevy, you are not much of a mechanic then. Their is no difference, but i can give you many reasons why a Mopar is much easier.

SO ... even the NSRA does allow new Hondas or Toyotas to enter the show. At the time it was pre 49 only. Even now ... it is 1982 models and back so you agruement does not hold ANY merit. :p

  29. I thought hemies are hard to find nowadays because they all exploded?!!?!?:D seriously though.

Chevy's are hard to find because everybody knows how good they are, and they're all hoarding them.

I don't mind seeing sbc's in cars. It IS traditional. However I do mind when someone has to tell me "you'll be sorry when that flathead has a problem ", or should have just put in a 350/th350 and be done with it. I know chevies are cheaper to build. I've built quite a few and still would love to have a 350hp 327, but I thought I would try and use "the original hot rod engine" a ford flathead in my 46 ford. Before the flathead v8 there really wasn't much of a speed parts market. That engine made Weiand, Edelbrock, Isky and a whole list of others household names. As for the length of service of a flathead, remember France was still using them into the early 90's. I don't bash others for there use of the sbc as I know it is cheaper and easier than most other engines to use and it is also the cheapest to hop up. If a water pump goes out on my flathead in the middle of nowhere I call a tow truck and order a new pump from Napa or Advance auto. If it's a sbc you go to either and buy the pump right then. There are no inherrent problems running either. A well built engine that is maintained is still a well built engine that is maintained regardless of manufacture or age. I don't worry about breaking rods or cranks etc in my flathead on a road trip anymore than the sbc guys do.
