You might enjoy Ed Thelen's archive of Nike missile sites.

There are some similar websites around for BOMARC as well.

It is SWELL to see an actual photo of the Herschell-Spillman V8 instead of artists' renderings. I seem to recall that these also served as the platform for Peerless' first V8 for 1916. In the second production year, Peerless engineers reworked the engines fairly radically (including, if I recall correctly, changing the crank and altering the firing order) to eliminate the "rocking" motion the H-S V8 was known for. HJManiac posted a very thorough article on the H-S/Peerless connection; for a good read, search the thread We ALL Love a DARE! PIX of TRULY Extinct Makes? and go to Posts # 3,085 through 3,087. Incidentally HAMB FNG OldVWs and his brother acquired a 1915 Standard with the first-gen H-S V8, with 283 displacement. The subsequent ones were 331.8-CID. The 283, it seems likely, was built for H-S by the Standard Steel Car Company by its newly acquired subsidiary, the Pittsburgh Model Engine Co. So, whether H-S ever truly build their own V8 is a question that has so far eluded a definitive answer.

I've been sort of fascinated by the H-S V-8s, so I've been on the lookout everywhere I surf. Here's a list of the companies I've learned of, so far. Any reliable additions or details WELCOME! :)

Shifting gears here: The early Dixie Flyers used Lycoming fours, then the company switched
to the more affordable Herschell-Spillman four, 1920. The later Dixie Flyers had pretty distinctive lines, especially
on the hood, as shown on EhDubya's Post 46,784 (below). Those sharp lines carried over to the radiator shell
design, which can be seen on the wrecked Flyer. VERY rare cars nowadays, maybe only four accounted for!
One is in Iceland! Bernie Jacobs restored a basket-case roadster near Brisbane and donated it back to the
descendants of the Kentucky Wagon Co. that built them in the first place! Awesome guy.

Post # 46913 is the intersection of Rt5 and Rt9 in Brattleboro, Vt near exit 3 of I-91. The Ho-Jo's is gone and there's now a rotary instead of the 4-way stop.

Post # 46914 is the Veterans Memorial Bridge on Rt9 about 1/4 mile from the intersection in the previous pic

  29. I found a pic of that bridge on Google Maps, but it looks like 2 bridges, or is it a ghost image ?
