I'm looking for anyone who is running an undropped 32 heavy axle on their car and would really like some pictures to see how it sits and info on their front set up. I do like the look of the undropped axle but am not sure how high it will sit. I've seen the spring behind the axle set up a.k.a Rolling Bones etc and here's a photo of Chris' sedan from Salt Flats Speed Shop.

I'm not sure if I can do the spring behind axle setup down here in OZ, but if I use a Model A front Crossmember, and reverse the spring eyes that would lower it bit ???? Pics and advice please.

Just a thought. I've done several deuce frames for customers who wanted to use the stock undropped axle with the spring in the stock location and I've Z'd the front of the rails 3" with a fairly flat crossmember and used a Walker shortened radiator. Gives about the same effect as a dropped axle. I did it for my roadster but I used dropped axle which really got it low. All these frames had a full pinch with the horns bobbed off.

The ***iest Hot Rod part ever is an undropped 32 axle. Second to that is a chromed v860 axle.

I'm going to run a 32 axle in my 33 because I don't have the heart to drop it and I'll use the 33 axle in the '32 because it needs a drop axle. I do love seeing the interesting engineering setups that people come up with the preserve these axles in stock form. Let's see 'em!!!

Monty, I think I would listen to Krylon '32s advice on this one. unless you want to go the full deal and move the spring behind the axle, this is gonna get you down quite a bit. Now if you really look at things, The Doanne Spencer car used the stepped rail that Krylon '32 said, and the spring behind like the rolling Bones guys have adopted. Low!

    Love your avatar!!!

I really like the look of a undropped axle that has been drilled...and get'er down low...

  7. Jake Jacobs has designed a set of bat wings that position the spring behind the axle. They work with hair pins. Bobby Walton said they will be selling them shortly as part of their Jitney line.

The original Ford font wishbone tubes are incredibly strong. They will easily carry the weight of a hot rod. I understand that hot rod builders in Oz need a consulting engineer. Have yours run the numbers. You may be surprised.

I prefer a dropped axle but that's just my opinion and that's what makes the Hamb such a great place to exchange ideas,,some of these cars look great with undropped,,especially Barry's coupe. HRP

Give some consideration to the hidden torsion bar concept pioneered by Lee Osborn. There's no spring to get in the way.

Just wondering why the Rolling Bones style ch***is gets the bend were it does and not at the firewall? Not knocking the deal, just wondering because I plan to use this style '32 ch***in under my '30 Roadster. Bob[IMG]

the pinch is some where around 9 1/2 to 10" becuse thats where the hood will be lined up with the frame and make it look smooth

Not quite as ***y, but IIRC, my 32 non heavy (32-36) has the same drop. Reverse eye Posies with 550's/750's front and back on a non-Zeed frame.

Hello, I wanted a 40's look roadster which used a non drop axle with split wishbones. Model A front crossmember, Schroader sprint car 16 to 1 box. 1946 Buick rear shocks on front end, Model T rear spring. Goodluck, Bob

Here's a '34 Ford on a '34 International -Split bones,Vega steer, disc brakes from Speedway. Spring perch and front crossmember set the height. Wanted enough umph for 455 Buick so it is heavy. Front tires are just rollers.

  18. Undropped 32 axles = super kool.

I runa dropped one on the 3W but on the roadster its an original heavy, undropped 32 axle for the pre WWII look which is what I want.

Imo it depends on the car/style your building.

I knew this thread still had some life yet..

How about some pics of the roadster, Rat ??

I've been given the o.k. to put the spring behind the axle which is good news, but my next question is regarding shock absorbers, and what people really think of the houdaille shocks ?? I've heard that they are pretty ordinary. Would tube shocks look out of place ?? Thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running the stock Houdailles on the back on my Model A. They were a pain in the *** to rebuild and they leak so you have to refill them every once in a while, but they actually work pretty well. Well worth the cool factor.

Up front I'm using Monroe 31000/NAPA RR94008 gas charged (16 1/2" resting/19.5" extended/12" compressed length; 48 Ford/91 Toyota truck rear. Dust tubes cut off to show cylinders) with 48-52 Ford F1 top mounts and Speedway bottoms. May be a little too modern for this kind of build but I think the car pulls them of pretty well with the Houdailles in the back. Sort of a transition car look if you ignore the Buick drums...

Tube shocks (Houdaille made the Ford tube shocks in the post-war era) on hotrods never look out ofplace unless you're going for a pre-war build style.
Houdaille lever action shocks are more than adequate for today's roads and highways. Think of what they went through on the highways and byways when they were new.
