Mike, I love this thread because we all ask about the details in these great historical pix.:p Too many sites on the net discourage people from asking questions, IMO. I look forward to learning something new every day:) (wish I had a buck for every HAMBer who's said that!)

You asked about the wrist watch. I'll bet the driver took it off before working on the plot the hoes were brought along for. Wikipedia said wrist watches were used at least as early as 1880 in the military, then became a fave but practical adornment among ladies who could afford them.

I'm in love with the young lady back there:eek: keeping the hoes in hand. From her hair doo, I'm wagging that it may be a late-'20s or early '30s pic. The gals could have been headed out in the old flivver to take care of the garden plot. Who knows? Maybe there's a picnic basket we can't see here? Don't mean to over-WAG. I'd just love to have a WAY-BACK and be able to know the PLACE AND TRUE DATE when the pic was taken!

The bike on the bottom looks like it would be a heavy one,I am so used to 10 speeds so when I first got on my balloon tire bike it was hard to pedal.

Not sure what the car is but the front bumper appears to be incorrect :D

It's a pretty good bet that it's based on a Schwinn. They used that elaborate springer front end (really more of a girder front end with a horizontal coil spring instead of a leaf or vertical spring such as you saw on a lot of early motocycles). I had a Schwinn that had the same setup, (without what looks like home-made bodywork).

The springer and the headlight definitely look like those on a Schwinn Black Phantom, the rest of the bike is too covered up to tell anything.

It reminds me of this 1936 Brooks Stevens design...
