Just picked up these bits and pieces the other day. Obviously I'm missing a heap more to make it complete. This is where I need your help. I need the other side bell, the rear cover and the "guts" of it. What year is my stuff? What's interchangeable, Franklin? New or old winters? Best places to get missing bits? Are the RH and LH side bells the same? Thanks guys.
That is a live axle sprint car rearend. Not sure that's what you want, but maybe the center section will work? Looks to be magnesium though, so that's a plus.
You didn't state what you are doing with it. If installing in street driven car you need everything new that is available from Winters or your auction sites. It is far cheaper to buy a complete unit with the correct differential for your application. You have the large unit and it requires the 10 inch ring gear. Keep your parts and search for another complete unit with all the parts you need. I am not a fan of Mag units for the street although I have used them with no problems. I just paint them a nice silver color.Good Luck.
Yep, you have what looks to be a magnesium Winters center which was most likely used with a live axle by the looks of your side bell. Pretty much all Winters, Frankland and most Halibrand stuff will interchange. You are gonna need a loaded pinion/ring gear, differential of some sort, left and right side bells, lower shaft, rear cover, seals and bearings. Most of that stuff you can pick up cheap on ebay if you want to do it a piece or two at a time, or, you can dial up Winters and have everything you need shipped to your door all in one shot. Then, you need to think about brakes, axles and axle tubes....What I like to do is order axle tubes whatever length I need with 9in Ford truck bearing flanges already installed. Then, have Mosher or Summers Bros build a new set of axles. The axles and tubes are pricey if you buy them new, but there are other options..hit the search ****on to gather intel and make the best decision to fit your budget. Good luck, -Abone.
Not 100% on my application, just slowly collecting odds and ends to build a salt flat / race inspired early 30's coupe or roadster. Why aren't you a fan of the magnesium ones? Keep in mind I'm in Australia where parts are scarce and I'm relatively new to this sort of stuff. Any input is much appreciated.
I would sell that, and start saving if you really want a quickchange for a street car. **** spadaros one would be my call. Budget on around 5K Aus. to complete it, drum to drum.
Winters sometimes stamps a date on the center section, but it's not important. There are a variety of pieces that will fit this case:Frankand, Jones, Coleman, Lynn etc. Be careful with Halibrand as there centers are wider so diffentials and bells required 'adjusting'. Lower Shaft, pinions etc. are mostly interchangeable. There are some differences in bearings but they are all fairly common. Left and right side bells are different, but you can use 2 lefts and a spacer. Best place to find pieces like you need are oval track race swap meets. If you are not in a hurry you can ***emble this very reasonably. If you are, get out your wallet. If you were to buy all the parts needed brand new, you would have at least twice as much invested as a brand new complete unit. My very first QC was built from racers left overs. The center and rear cover from one place the bells from another and the spool and ring gear from yet another. The ring and pinion did not match and I wound up swapping the ring gear with a friend. Once ***embled, it went in a drag car and never gave a bit of trouble. I'm working on a book about all of this. By the time it's done you may have already gathered the pieces you need. In the mean time I will be glad to help if I can.
My nickles worth... Being that the pictures above are the only parts you currently have...and if you really want a quickchange...I'd just save your money and go to Winters (Speedway Motors), Tiger Rear ends, Speedway Engineering, or one of a few other locations, and just buy one that's complete, properly setup and ready to bolt in. I'd be willing to bet...if you collect all the items required (WHAT version of each part....for each and every part !), and then have things setup "properly"...by the time you're done, you'll have much more money and time in your one off rear end thAn you would if you just bought a ready to bolt in ***embly. Even in AU. Me, I've got a Winters Champ version in my 54, Conestoga (Studebaker). Mike
Thanks GearheadsQCE. How do I tell if I have a left or right side bell? Do you have any parts for sale?
I hear what your saying mate, but like most people on here I dont have a big wad of cash burning a hole in my pocket to just buy a complete new one. I'm also in no rush, so that's why I'd like to just pick up bits and pieces along the way.
You will be fine doing it that way. I have pieced together two of them this way for very little money.
Yes, the change gears are interchangeable. You want 1 3/8" wide gears. Just noticed that I never answered the op's question. So, 8 years later: the bearing pocket in the left bell is deeper than the right side.
