I had a car once, that when it warmed up the points gap would close up and shut it off. You said you changed points, so it's a bit of a reach. When it shuts off, quick pull the cap and see if the points are opening.

Had another one with a loose ground wire to the points. That was more of a random shutdown and hard restart, but did it more when hot.

  2. Have you tried "hot wiring" the car. Throw 12 volts right to the coil from the baterry and start the car. Its what i would do at this point. And if you cook the coil it sounds like you have another one laying around.

I don't know if your car is set up this or not. I once had a 1967 Fairlane that shut off after running for a while. It turned out to be the stock push on lead to + side of the coil. It simply pushed over the bolt sticking out of the coil but not tight enough. It would build up resistence over time. I gave it a gentle squeeze with the pliers and it was good to go.

Whatever it is... the cure is going to be something ridiculous and almost a free fix... those are the most exasperating.

UPDATE: I got fed up with the ignition system and bought a HEI distributor with a coil, ran the 12v wire from ignition switch to the coil and tested it...

IT STILL DOES IT! It will run for a few seconds then die out. It will cut off like if i turned off the ignition switch (which is also new) it wont sputter or anything. Im prety much at my wits end over this car, this is starting to not be fun at all... Any ideas?

Temporarly run a jumper straight from the battery to the dist . Both + and a ground to dist housing from battery. This should byp*** all other possibilities of curcuit proplems. If that keeps it running work backwards from there.

Hate this sort of problem. I thinking your new ignition switch is faulty or the solinoid is cutting power. What's left?

did what you described and it still does it, pulled a spark plug and its super dark and sooty, gonna replace them and see if it will run better then.

Did you check to see if you still have spark right after it shuts off? If you give it a shot of starting fluid does it try to start at all?
