Ned Jordan may have gotten original inspiration for his car advertising, seeing ads such
as this for the Roamer. The copy clearly is selling image and prestige, and the ad says a
lot about what was in the heads of Barley, Kenworthy and their designer, Karl H. Martin.

I regret that these photos are so small. They hark back
to a time when people could drive through a number of
ancient redwood trees on the so-called "Redwood High-
way" in the Pacific Northwest. Squidoo statess only three
of these drivable tourist attractions remain. And, for
obvious reasons, no more can be created.

I can't believe you have just posted what I was thinking! I, too, have a Hendey, and it is also from that era. Every detail that can be seen on that lathe is the same as mine.

When I find a site with great material, I cut and paste over and over.
But when I got to this photo, just stopped me dead.
    This car is striking.

Hope no one minds posting a modern photo of a Roamer for comparison purposes, and so we can see one in better detail and color.

Glenn Curtiss, early aircraft designer, stands beside one of his airplanes at his flight school on North Island in about 1911. The pilot is reportedly Mohan Singh

The Glenn Curtiss hydroplane preparing to take off in San Diego Bay flew out to the USS Pennsylvania, landed on the water then later took off to fly back to San Diego. This event inaugurated naval aviation in February 1911

Devil's Canyon Road was a tortuous trail across the mountains. Stineman's roadster leads the group of wagons. His 1910 Brush Runabout, sporting one cylinder of eight-horse power, frequently appeared in his scenes.

In April 1913, cars from San Diego met those from Imperial Valley to celebrate the new road that avoided the old Devils Canyon route from Mountain Springs down to Coyote Wells.

Road racing was very popular at the time with many racetracks in the San Diego area. This Fiat belonged to the real estate develpers McFadden and Buxton who were one of Stineman's largest employers. Joseph McFadden sits at the wheel.

This lonely Arca streetcar No. 2 on the Mexico and San Diego Railway ran between Imperial Beach and Otay Junction. The sparse surroundings contrast strongly with present developed areas.

A carefully posed car drives along present Catalina Blvd., toward the old "Spanish" lighthouse.

October 25, 1913, an acrobat named France LeFranc, attempted a headstand atop the statue of "Justice" on the old courthouse. Strong winds and the soft statue head interfered with the attempt.

The real estate partnership of McFadden and Buxton occupied an arcade running between Fourth and Fifth Ave. It included many types of stores predating the shopping mall.

Do these vehicles exist anywhere today? Is there a photo of the very last Studebaker made?

That's the Point Loma lighthouse which is very much still there and a popular visiting point. it overlooks the the extreme end of Point Loma (the entrance to San Diego Bay) and being elevated, has great views of the Bay side and the ocean side. It's part of Cabrillo National Monument.

Love these old pics of San Diego. Lived there many years.

Glenn Curtiss featured heavily in S.D. (and SoCal in general) aviation development when he move his operations from N.Y. to where the weather was more conducive to year round development and flying. You should find tons of pics of the Consolidated Aircraft factory, most of which still stands and the old seaplane ramp is a regular fixture along the bay.
