How Many Fat Fendered guys are running IFS and proud of it?

If so, tell me what you like about it....................Seems like I'm seeing less and less I beams on these cars. I have a IFS sitting on the shelf and I am on the fence about using it.
I know, I asked for it.

 

We put them on customer cars on a regular basis. You can do a good job making a beam handle and ride as good as possible, but it still pales in comparison to IFS. Worlds apart.

Yes, it will piss-off the purists, but it is your car. Unless the fenders won't largely hide it, I say go for it. Then again, I am one of those whipper-snappers (42), and am not old enough to know much.

I have IFS on my 37 pickup and a beam on my 40. The 40 is fun to drive and handles good. The 37 rides and handles like a sports car. Its badass!
Two completely different rides. Just depends what you plan to use them for.

 

IFS improves steering and handling and I don't give a ratsass what anyone thinks of my suspension. The IFS does not show at all. Ya think it's ugly?

I am a purist and love the I beam axle look on open wheel cars.I am also 72 years old and like to drive my car to the events far away which is not comfortable for my old back in a axle car. The IFS provides a much smooth ride, less bouncing and greatly improved steering. The choice is yours and forget about tradition as many young people feel a MII and and a 9 inch on parallel leafs is very traditional as they have been around for 30 plus years.

 

1941 Ford coupe, 11 years with a heidt's must II, 31,000 miles and two cross country runs. I recommend the coil overs in lieu of the coil springs.

I also run a Heidts mustang 11..and i'm not embarrassed about it in the least..drastically improved the handling of the car.

 

1935 Ford Pickup, 60s Corvair IFS and Pinto rack. Its ugly as hell but hidden by the fenders.

I dig traditional but build what works best for you and screw the traditional police if they don't like it.

 

FatMan sub set-up on my Poncho. Power rack/discs smooth ride. I kept waiting for donations to come and never saw any so I had to end up building it my way. No apologies here.

a 46-48 coupe is one of my future cars I want to own. I MII susp is the only way I would build one. For me, a dropped axle is fine for 40 and older rides but anything newer and give me independant susp

 

The roads are so bad here in Rhode Island you can put a clip from a Bently under your ride and it would still ride like crap.

What are you building anyway, and do I know you?

 

Grew up in Connecticut. Have relatives in Thompson (North Grovesnordale), just over the R.I. line, and elsewhere, throughout the state.

 

Ifs and IRS and I drive the hell out of it.

 

I'm planning to run a MII in my 47.

 

I have a 48 chevy sedan delivery with a ce front and rear complete chassis kit..including 1" swaybars front and rear...the car hasnt really been on the road other than some short blasts around the block..it seens to ride a little hard and steers extremly easy..maybe larger front tires will give somemore road feel...the installation was very simple..good quality bolt in setup..

 

I was ashamed to put MMII under my 39 Ford, 46 Mercury, and 1948 Chevy panel. So far, have it on the 48 Chevy panel.
Noticed at car events with fat fendered vehicles it is difficult to see what is under most so who cares if it works?
But not on a open wheeled car.

A large part of the fun of driving an old car is the old feeling in the suspension. With everything rebuilt the ride is fine for me.

Funny how all these guys are on a traditional forum with all these goofy suspensions. Why the fuck don't you just buy a sports car if you want to ride like a sports car?? I miss the OLD HAMB...

 

I opted to utilize a more modern small truck frame of the chevy persuation to set my original 41 sheet metal on,, I just had it down the 8th mile runways drags, It was a gas, handled great. I use a stock 41 truck steering wheel with flaming river u-joint replacing the rag joint and one other u-joint, other than that, stock S10 front suspension, manual steering, with a 1 1/2 in spring spacer

 

Got a 48 Chev pickup with Jag IRS Jag IFS and steering, plus a 37 Nash project with the same setup too. Dammit, I got radials too.

Also have two Model A projects, a 28 RPU & a 28 Phaeton, which will get dropped I beams and a 23 bucket and a 26 T coupe & they both have I beams in them.

If I can see the suspension easily I prefer the I beam. If its hidden under big guards, then Jag is a cheap and very easy option for me.

 

i have 38 willys coupe with a home built i.f.s. which iv'e had on the road for ten years,never think about the suspension, the steering is positive but with plenty of feed back.with a low fat fendered rod no one ever see's whats underneath anyway.omho.

 

Adam, I don't think we ever met but I usually make it to most of the local shows.........I'm not big on cruise nights though.
I just picked up a '39 Std. sedan form Warwick (it was on CL). We have a shop in Bristol and make most of our own parts including MII type front IFS, I already have one for a 39/40 made and am not sure I want to use it. I have always liked the stock I beam but I'm getting older and maybe deserve a little better ride now and I like the idea of stopping also.........

My 39 Ford Standard got the works,kept the 51 mercury engine,went with IFS and c4 auto trans,and granada rear end.I hated the car with 4.44 gears,and grinding trans.
Once its done your engine choices are unlilimited.

 

It pleases me immensely to piss off the purists. Especially here. And the reason is exactly what you said.
