Let's Talk Cyclecars

Here is my old amilcar, gone but not forgotten I swapped it for a 37 Hudson but that belongs in another forum

 

Miss JoJo was built by a little Englishman named Oliver Way.A creative uninhibited sort of character.He also built Salamanda ,another Austin Seven special.He has built a number of other interesting creations ,including this Hall Scott powered special(a little outsized to be a cyclecar).

Folks, I'm in need of some assistance as I start to finalize the drawings for my project Cyclecar.

I've liberally cribbed the AV "Monocar" design quite a lot, though I've pushed the proportions around a tad to accommodate seating and expected mechanical bits.






The wheel and tire sizes of these original AV Monocars are still mysteries to me. At my age I'm working more toward a visually pleasing replica Cyclecar than one designed for speed and handling (though I think its going to be pretty good in those areas as well).

Does anyone know of the wheel/tire sizes of these cars, or better yet, this particular example?





I tried blowing up a section of the rear wheel in the above photograph and can make out some writing on the tire, but for the life of me I can't tell if its the name of the tire's manufacturer or the size - - anyone care to hazard a guess?







Rotating the photo 90 degrees makes me think the printing says "Coker," a manufacturer of early tire replicas.




Even a good guess would be helpful.

Dale,what i do in cases like this ,is try to reference the object to something in the picture nearby.The only thing I see are people.It looks like the top of the tire is somewher near the heighth of the man's knee or a little higher.Also ,it looks like the tire came from Coker. 3.25" X 20" ?

It could maybe be used at a measuring gauge.

I'm in with the question of Graham Hill whistling down the hill in 999MPB. Looks to be the proper helmet from the rowing club and all but I don't know that he drank enough to give that thing a run. )

So - - can someone familiar with the UK tax discs supply a diameter? I'm sure it would help with determining some of the other measurements of the car.


I've had a soft spot for this particular car for quite a while - - second only (maybe) to my attraction for the Scripps Booth Rocket - - - or maybe the "Jappic."

I kinda think the car being discussed here looks a bit like a old fashioned megaphone




Or, maybe even more like Professor Fate's "Hannibal Eight" (From "The Great Race")

Uk tax disc is 3 inches in diameter, my guess at the tyres would be 26x2.5 which is 700mm outside diameter or 580 mm outside diameter of the rim , this is what I used to scale the pics of the jappic

That would put the wheelbase of the little Monocar somewhere about 83-85 inches, so, to keep the proportions if I upsize the wheelbase to 100 inches, I'll require wheels nearly 31 inches in diameter.

Some suitable sized wheels probably exist and can most likely be found, but it's sure gonna take some searching I'm thinking.

Congratulations on efforts to bring the Jappic to life - - - a worthwhile project for sure.

Get the info email address and ask the guy in the funky sweater behind the wheel of the car about it.Longstone Tyres are the UK equivalent of Coker Tire here in the states.The guy in the strange sweater is Dougal.He's a character and would be more than entertained to answer your questions!
