Tracked vehicle grip is still an issue from time to time. I once watched an Aussie Leopard Tank nail it and spin both tracks until it was almost fully sideways off the mark. Exercise K95, NT somewhere off Warrego Rd near Tennant Creek from memory. It is very impressive to see something that big sideways and flat out!!:D

Studebaker Avanti production ended with the 1964 model (Other non Studebakers have been produced over the years, however.) The last Studebaker was produced in 1966. It was a Cruiser with a 283 V8 engine. The last two years of Studebaker production took place in Hamilton, Ontario. Since everything shut down in South Bend Studebaker engines were no longer available thus Studebaker of Canada used McKinnon engines.

Here is the last Studebaker. It came of the line on March 16, 1966 ending Studebaker's 116 year history of vehicle production.

In the mid-1950's Studebaker and Porsche looked at producing a rear engined Studebaker, but that project fell through. This 1960 Lark has a 1.5 liter Porsche engine that most likely came from that earlier joint project. The little engine made the vehicle terribly underpowered and the idea ended with the car you see above. This car is on display in the basement of the National Studebaker Museum in South Bend. This car was a project of Curtis-Wright probably because of the soon to be Corvair.

  12. Is the McKinnnon 283 V8 a Chevy engine? I have heard it referred to as such. Why is it called the McKinnon V8?

Obviously I know next to nothing about Studes but find them interesting.

  13. Here's Pop in his Model-A roadster probably about the mid 30s. I guess both nature and nurture were at work on brother & I.

German flying offizers must have been well compensated. Is that not a Bugatti he's sitting in? Car in background doesn't look cheap either.

Must be something about the job. I recall Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach was lousy with Corvettes back in the Project Mercury and Gemini days.

What gives you the slightest idea any of those cars were paid for? When you occupy another country with a totalitarian rule such as the Nazi's you take what you want!

And the Bugatti might have been "appropriated" for use by the nazi.
