Friend of mine bought these a few years ago & we can't figure out what there for 7 we can't find a pic of them on a car!! Can anyone help me out? JimV
Says "spring mounted" on the box. Maybe they filled in the gap between the small caps and edge of rim. Bob
they seem about the size that might fit between a hubcap & the edge of the rim.Definatily not the size to be White walls. JimV
I don't have the box here, but i'd say the box is about 15x15.I really think they go between the the outer edge of a hub cap & the edge of the rim, so it makes a "hubcap" into a "wheel cover". I've been looking for some pics of a car with them & can t find them. I think if it was for a conti kit there would only be one. JimV
I've got a similar set. Somewhere! I never put them on but I was under the impression they fit between the small center hubcap and the edge of the wheel rim... I've seen it Or something similar on a shoebox somewhere onetime...
they are for a postwar chrysler if they are made of steel...kind of like a pseudo whitewall. the factory did this to dress up their cars with the "whitewall look" ...rubber for real whitewall tires was in short supply immediately postwar....check out photos from back in the day of chryslers, dodges, de sotos, and plymouths and you will see them....no other mfr. used them...when I bought my 48 new yorker, the rusty rings were in the trunk.
These have been on here before. Look really neat. They go between the center cap and the outer rim. I'm sure i saved a picture, i'll go and have a look.
Yeah, those things usta be very popular in the late 40s-early 50s. My dad bought a sky blue 46 Pontiac coupe when I was a kid and it had them. They are used with dog-dish hubcaps and fill the area between the hubcap and the wheel edge. I don't think I've ever seen them used with whitewall tires. That'd give a weird look! Especially if the 2 whites were a little different shade.
Did you even read or look at the original post? Fits 49-54 FORD, not immeadiately post war AND they are in a FORD box, definately not chrysler.
Knew i had Think they look the business!!!!!! Really suit the car, thats why i saved the pics. Plus the fact it's one of my top roadsters, simply gorgeous.
Slightly different, but I found this on the net...... http://forums.aaca.org/f145/oem-hubcap-white-wall-trim-rings-292410.html
Jim, they "snap" onto the wheel under the factory hubcaps to make the car look like it has full wheelcovers/whitewalls. They look pretty cool in place. I have a set of "Calnevar" chromesides which do the same thing for the 49-50 ford 16" shoebox wheel. Those are neat. Here's a pic of the chromesides on tucks shoebox without the centercaps:
the fact that the rings came in a ford box is true...but these rings were used bu chrysler FIRST before anybody else used them....monkey see...monkey do.
Chrysler started using wheel rings like that just before WWII I believe and then through the mid-50s or so.. The first ones were white plastic(maybe soy-based like Ford experiments?), then white-painted steel and polished stainless. Fit behind standard dogdish caps and give a different look. They never became super popular. This is the first time I knew that any manufacturer other than Chrysler even offered such a thing.
