Im in the process of building the bracket which I think Im done,Just wondering what other ideas are out there....My frame is narrowed more than stock ,So anything speedway sells wont work......Even If I modify ......
Mat, What part number is that alternator or what model car does it come out of? How many amps is it? I'm trying to fit an alternator down low on the drivers side of my 33 Chevy and a GM one doesn't fit.
How much room do you have to work with would help us help you. Most my t frames are 22" inside to inside frame rails and I have a mount that works great, but no idea if you need narrower than that
I have a 283 with a short water pump. I have 7 3/4" from the inside of the frame to the center of the lower hole just above the oil pan. The steering shaft and u joints going to the rack won't let me mount it too low. I do plan on running a hood with side panels. I tried a Mr. Gasket bracket with a GM alternator but it hits the shaft.
hmm not the best of pics but if you click the link there is a much larger version. http://www.netquickposse.org/photos/index.php?album=bucket2&image=18+sep+2011+050.JPG I have 6 1/2 from the middle lower hole to the frame
Here is a better one: http://www.netquickposse.org/photos/index.php?album=bucket3&image=8+may+2012+003.JPG
Thanks for the pictures Keep. I tried that and the bottom of the alternator was hitting my steering shaft. I was hoping to find a smaller diameter alternator than the GM one and fab my own brackets to make it fit there. If not I'll have to switch to a long water pump and move to the other side like the attached pic.
Are you using the stock fuel pump? There is a small 55amp GM alt from a metro or something that's pretty small. Others have used some not so American ones that are pretty small as well. Mine is pretty tight in there, to get the wires off I have to drop some bolts. Had to have the alt fan replaced with a smaller one as well.
Yes I'm using the stock mechanical fuel pump. I'll check out the Metro alternator you mentioned. Thanks, Tom
If you have a local alt/starter repair shop you can give them a shot as well. They could probably point you in the right direction pretty quick. I am lucky that I have a good shop not far from me, they helped my out more then once when I was trying to fit my stuff together.
I don't remember the part number but if I remember right it was off of a early 90's Accord. I bought it off of Ebay. Again I don't the exact amp rating but I think its around 90. I will say this ,it does just fine keeping up with my monster electric fuel pump, 4 radiator fans, 1 trans cooler fan, and the headlights. It's not a ton smaller then the 90's GM alternators but it's quite a bit smaller the earlier ones. If you go the denso route I would recommend one off of a 80's-early 90's Toyota Land Cruiser. From what I read after I bought mine, is that they put out around 100 amps and are all ready set up with a v-belt pulley. Plus they have the more standard 180 mounting pattern. Also the wiring is standard 3 wire hook-up not like the Honda's 4 wire. Which I never found a diagram for and had to make an educated guess. You other route with Denso I believe is off of Kubota tractor. These are super tiny but you're only looking around 40 amps. Which might be enough output for you. I needed more that's why I was shooting for something around 100 amps. Here's a link to Kiwi Kev's Metro denso alternator braket. Just scroll down it's on the first page. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=558027&highlight=kiwi+kev+alternator Good luck
Thanks Mat, One of the local hot rod shops showed me a small alternator that looks just like the one in Kiwi Kev's post. He wasn't sure where he got it from. I'll look into that.
I finally solved my alternator fit problem. A friend got this Denso 55 amp alternator that was small enough to fit where I wanted it. I designed the brackets in CAD and had them machined. I still need to get a shorter belt but I like the way it fits.
wow great job that alternator bracket looks sweet, exactly what l am after for my 28 Model A tourer with the same small alternator.
Holey moldey thread! With my frame being pinched 3/4"/side and wanting a full size alternator, some evasive action was required.
I've used the Alan Grove 209L lower mount which used a smaller 100 amp CS130 GM alternator on several of my deuces. Has worked good, just have to watch where you put your thru the frame brake fitting.
