I'm burnt out from working in heat all day... it was a thread with something to do with 6 bolt Buick Selector transmission aftermarket shifters.

I will try to think of a way to find more search words if I can

^^That is pretty slick Littlewing. I have been looking at the photo of the ford top-plate conversion and mulling it over, I would bet the adapter plate is not really necessary, just there so its a bolt-on deal. I would bet you could just drill and tap the ford bolt pattern on the top of the case and re-work the selector forks. Wish I had a packard trans handy that I could take a good look at...

I havent even had a chance to search yet. My wife and I bought a business recently, and I am still doing a full-time job, so I am not on here as much as I used to be.

George, I found the thread, but I was wrong on a better view of the forks. There is a 2nd pic next to the pic view that is already on this thread. I mistook the 2nd pic as a different view, but it is a different Eelco external shifter, made to look like a top shift case.

It says Eelco made them for other makes of cars, including side shift Cad/LaS. I do have one of those, it's wild looking :)

I had a big series Buick trans with a Ford top adapted to it much like the one on the Packard trans pictured. I had bought it from B&M transmissions, now I know it was Lou Sales, who built those adapters, always thought it was B&M. HAMB clears up the past agin.

Can you recall anything about the shifter forks? Were they modified ford parts?

  9. Oddly enough, I was thumbing through the Offenhauser catalog and found that PN 3641 will adapt a Packard trans to anything with a flathead Ford bellhousing pattern. ;)

    That's my contribution. LOL.

ha! lets see that was in??? 1964 or so?? I, believe the Ford trans had the same shift travel, and the Ford fork arms were cut and the Buick arms were fitted and brazed on. I never used the trans as I had gotten the Packard trans and was going open drive. however I did get to ride in the Model A the Buick trans was installed in. !t was behind a 322 nailhead Buick and he could lift the front wheels with it.

George, since we are so far off topic on a Packard thread... :) ...

Check out this old time swap that I have never even heard about before:

It is a Olds 51-59 Selector trans case and gears, but someone added the 37 Buick "big series" top cover. Well, you can't just throw on a top cover, because the Buick had the forks attached to the rails that were in the trans case.

This builder cut new thick steel blocks, then drilled them for the rails, and the detent balls/springs, and then cut slots in the top of the trans case to hold the blocks.

Then they installed the 37 Buick rails and forks.

The blocks seem to be welded in with stainless or nirod, I dunno.

Now, you got to wonder why they did not just use the 37 Buick case and just do the Olds tailhousing mod to make it fit? They must have had a complete 37 Buick trans, so I don't get it. Maybe they could not figure out how to swap the tail housing ?

BTW, I am using a 37 Buick big series trans case/top cover/forks, with my 55 Olds gears/shafts, and tailhousing. I love this transmission.;)

I have a packard Od in my old steel body 16
T bucker with the floor shift kit, I had to heat and bend the shifter to get away from my leg. I remember reading about the conversion using another top shift tower but would like more detailed info what years parts used and mods needed.

I'm putting a 39 Packard side-shift box with OD behind the 392 in my Model A. I'm using a Trans-Dapt NC-71 bellhousing to mount the Packard box on the Hemi. This bell uses a 57 Ford throw-out lever and stock Chrysler 172-tooth flywheel, starter, and clutch. Planning to adapt a standard shifter to the box. Have not been able to find a top shift setup to modify to fit.
