The ground is shaking as Danny Ongais leaves the line at Austin Raceway Park in Austin TX in the summer of 1967 during a points race there. The fellow in the tee shirt covering his ears is Murray Oxman, owner of AEECO in Dallas. At the time, Murray was sponsoring Danny, though to what extent I couldn't say. Danny ran a number of Div 4 races in the Honda of Wilmington car during that time and would stop into AEECO on occasions when in the area. Of course, this is all before he went on to fame as an Indy car driver.

Your right. Nichols car featured a Hanna style tail section in '68 and was painted a blue and purple hue.

Here is a view of Lions that I have not seen much of.Sorta cool.
Looks like one of the Logghe Comets circa 1966,maybe Don Nicholson.

  12. Seen the "Phony Pony" at Lions numerous times. If memory serves me correctly it wasn't that successful. Wild looking tho, Stretched and narrowed '66 Mustang body on a dragster frame. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it ran two injected 289"s.

Did Gates build that car himself? I saw it recently on the internet, and thought about the other cars. Shame there are no remains of them.

In the early 70's I helped construct a comp car out of one of the Cougars.
It was a later round tube upright Logghe and I don't know who made the body. It had an early Chry plate and had been changed over to solid rear suspension. It had all the paint scraped off, and I never was able to know whose it was originally.

There was a period of time, right around the GM pull out, and Chrysler was refining the ram horn to max wedge, the Hi-Riser was the leader on strips and super speedways.
Because of such a strong Ford presence in my region, it was the predominant player during the years prior to Hemis, bar none.
In fact, we used a tunnel port as late as 1975 for an altered built for the new 4bbl Econo classes in Comp, and it couldn't be touched even using a convertor Bill Taylor had made for me back in the 60's.
Damn things would run and would have been immensely more famous if FMC had only made more of them.
And sadly, they never made anything that truly superseded them either.

Some body can correct me if I'm wrong here, but didn't Hurst sell mounts to put a FE in a 5'-7' Chev?

From what I've read, it was built in 1967 from a body and Logghe chassis that was left over from the original project.

Definitely a Castlereagh shot and I am pretty certain it was at the 1971 Aussie Nats. At one point during our time in Sydney for the race we went to John's place where we worked on the car in a dirt floor garage. I may have posted a similar shot that I took at the race earlier in this thread.

In 1966 Pete bought Dyno Don's old 65 Comet and won the Super Stock Nationals with it, beating the new fliptop Comets with it. In 1967 he was got a left over fliptop body and chassis and made it the Gate Job.

I was there for this. It was the Supernationals in 1970. Gordon Collect learned the need to torque the lug nuts. Man was top gas a great class.

Back again. I've been wandering around posting on other threads that don't always relate to cars in motion. Check out Famous Texas Tracks, or Oklahoma drag strips if you have any interest in some other views and stories.

As I mentioned in another post, the NHRA Nationals was THE race for me. This view of two gorgeous gassers was typical of what passed by. My buddies didn't car much for any kind of 'door slammer' but I loved it all. The action was so torrid there's no way you could see everything and still check out the pits, etc. No idea of who these guys were but I bet some of you sharp eyed guys will remember these from your local track. Let's hear it!

6-19-12 ID'd by Jamerson as Rudy Held's Gold Gambler from Ontario Canada and Norm Paddack's Willys from Indiana. Thanks!

Yet another view that I simply can't ID. The Fenner Tubbs SS/AA was driven by Joe Smith from Lubbock Texas. The car was often mistakenly ID'd as Ernest Tubbs-understandable, but not quite the same. Not sure about the Vagabond car from Dayton. Given that Ohio cars seldom raced at Tulsa, this must have been at the World Points Finals one year. As always, additional info and stories welcome.

More unknown AA/FD action at Southwest Raceway in Tulsa. These Tulsa races were always a good time. On one trip, one of our buddies, the late Sam Shakeley said he'd arranged for us to stay with his rich uncle in Tulsa. Yeah right. We attended the races on Saturday, then headed for his uncles.

The place had brick and iron gates guarding a long driveway. We entered and were met by UNIFORMED servants at the front door, who carried our bags. Unreal!!! We met his aunt and uncle who were most friendly and accommodating to a bunch of sweaty teenagers. Got cleaned up and the servants served us a huge feast at this long table (candles and all) in the dining room while Sam's aunt and uncle listened to our tales of the races. Everyone got their own room and we awoke to delicious smells coming from downstairs. Another feast of bacon, sausage eggs potatoes and mounds of homemade pastries. The drag race teenagers do Downton Abbey! They packed us off to the Sunday meet with all the leftover pastries, which we munched on the rest of the day. We profusely and genuinely thanked them for their gracious and generous hospitality. It was bar none THE BEST drag race accommodations we ever had.

Top Gas eliminator at the 1966 World Finals in Tulsa had Gordon Collett (on the far side I believe) going up against Dick Padar. Pader won the championship.

I am thinking the Willys is a B/Gasser getting a handicap over the A/Gas Anglia, that or its one hell of a hole shot

Very unique to say the least. Blown gas motors are much less forgiving to tune than any other, but once in the groove they were very consistent and predictable. Tom S.

P.S.; I've often wondered why didn't they keep at least 1 blown gas class and move it to Comp? Or could have left it in Pro-Comp, they were just as fast.
Someone correct me here if I'm wrong, but blown gassers were the only class left for supercharged gas motored cars by 1971, were they not?
Drag racing marketing changed it all to Holley classes.

Top gas did continue on in comp eliminator until the development of pro-comp at the end of 1973. Top gas replaced BB/GD. BB/GD long being a class reserved to blown small block motors. Wayne McMurtry (spl) being the last stand out of the class. He ran a 331" Chrysler and won Div 5 meets and at least one national in that car in 1971. Here in So-Cal combo elim ( a precurser to pro-comp) was quickly taking stride in popularity and most all the single engined top gas guys focused here if they wanted to continue racing their now "sportsman" type car. Many didnt want anything to do with handicap style rcing. Pro-Comp also made allowances for single engined blown gas rails in the 70's, just as they did for the old junior fuelers. But like the wedged head jr fuelers, all the weight breaks in the world didnt help. I think Dale Smart coaxed 7-teens out a RED with a blown gas Donovan in 76 or so.

This view of Ohio George taking on what looks like Seivers, Weisner and Owens at the Nationals in 1966 is a bit soft but I though someone might remember it. A number of my views had to be tossed or wound up either shaken like this or with someones head in the way as we all jostled for a better look. I don't blame anyone-with such great racing, who wouldn't get excited and try for the best view.

Alright Pomona fuel car fans, here's another one with no ID from the Winternationals in 1968. Look familiar?
